Summary: The study investigated the prevalence and risk factors of postinfection irritable bowel syndrome (PI-IBS) in patients with Campylobacter infection, finding that factors such as female sex, younger age, bloody stools, abdominal cramps, and hospitalization during acute enteritis were associated with the development of PI-IBS.

Summary: The study revealed a decreasing trend in the incidence and prevalence of IBS in Taiwan from 2012 to 2018, with over 70% of patients receiving treatment and antispasmodics being the most commonly prescribed medication. However, only 48.58% of patients returned for a follow-up visit within 1 year of IBS diagnosis.

Summary: There is a strong association between the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and an increased risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), particularly within the first year of IBS diagnosis. However, in the long term, IBS does not lead to an increased risk of CRC.

Summary: IBS is a common gastrointestinal disease globally, with current guidelines mainly based on western populations. China, with its large population, has a vast literature on IBS, but linguistic variations have caused these studies to be less known in western medical literature. Research on IBS in the Chinese population can benefit understanding and future studies in this area.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms and post-COVID-19 disorders of gut-brain interaction among hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. The results showed that patients with COVID-19 had higher rates of gastrointestinal symptoms on hospital admission and lower rates of constipation and hard stools at 12 months post-infection compared to the control group. Additionally, the rate of irritable bowel syndrome was significantly higher in patients with COVID-19 than in controls.

Summary: This prospective population-based study assessed the predictors of new onsets of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), and fibromyalgia (FM). The study found that syndrome-specific predictors were more common than shared ones. The study also revealed a close relationship between IBS and FM, which requires further research.

Summary: This article evaluates the evidence that targeted pathophysiological mechanisms and customized treatments can be an alternative approach to treating patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The authors conducted a literature review on the mechanisms and treatments of IBS, identifying various noninvasive clinical tests that can assess the underlying mechanisms responsible for symptom generation. These mechanisms include rectal evacuation disorders, abnormal transit, visceral hypersensitivity or hypervigilance, bile acid diarrhea, sugar intolerances, barrier dysfunction, the microbiome, immune activation, and chemicals released by these mechanisms. The authors also recognized the basic molecular mechanisms contributing to these pathophysiologies, offering opportunities for interventions with medications targeted at specific food components, receptors, and potentially the microbiome. Although the evidence supporting interventions for each mechanism varies, the current state-of-the-art allows for a shift from symptom-based treatment to individualized treatment guided by pathophysiology and clinically identified biomarkers.

Summary: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder characterized by altered gut-brain interaction and dysfunction of the brain-gut-microbiota axis. Prior studies have shown significant impairments in the health-related quality of life of patients with IBS. Resilience, as a psychosocial ability, plays a crucial role in promoting health and enhancing stress response.

Summary: The study found that resilience is lower in patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) compared to the general population, leading to more severe symptoms. The impact of global mental health on resilience is more significant in IBS compared to the general population, and early adverse life events also decrease the ability to bounce back from adversity. While resilience in IBS is lower than the general US population, it is comparable to other chronic gastrointestinal conditions.

Summary: IBS is strongly influenced by diet, but identifying specific food intolerances is difficult due to the complexities of diet. Rapidly fermented carbohydrates and gut-specific mast cell activation may cause symptoms in IBS patients. More research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms of food intolerances and improve personalized medicine approaches to diet in IBS.

Summary: This study examined the association between gut microbiota and Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) subtypes, and found that there are distinct differences in microbiota composition among different IBS subtypes. The microbial diversity is significantly reduced in IBS-D and IBS-U, but not in IBS-C. The study also identified microbial signatures associated with depression in IBS patients. Factors such as gender, age, and dietary patterns have significant effects on gut microbiota in different IBS subtypes. These findings emphasize the importance of personalized gut microbiome modulation approaches for optimal therapeutic effects in different subtypes of IBS.

Summary: The study found that the use of CSI-EMR does not increase the complete or en bloc resection rate of colorectal lesions with SSL endoscopic features, but does increase the R0 resection rate. Although the procedure time is longer for CSI-EMR, there is no significant difference in adverse events or recurrence rate compared to EMR. Further evaluation is needed to assess the association of CSI-EMR with R0 resection and non-recurrence.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed endoscopic resection data from January 1999 to December 2019 to investigate the risk factors for pathological upgrades of gastric low-grade dysplasia (LGD) to early gastric cancer (EGC) or high-grade dysplasia (HGD). The results showed that lesion size exceeding 1.5 cm, mucosal nodularity, heterogeneous color, presence of erosion, and open-type gastric atrophy were significantly associated with upgraded pathology to EGC. Among EGC cases, 89.2% had pre-existing dysplasia. Therefore, endoscopic evaluations should be performed in LGDs, especially those exhibiting surface nodularity, erosion, heterogeneous color, and large size, to prevent possible pathological upgrades and co-existence of carcinomas.

Summary: The study investigated the prognostic significance of soluble PD-L1 (sPD-L1) and exosomal PD-L1 (exoPD-L1) in patients with gastric cancer receiving chemotherapy. It was found that low levels of sPD-L1 and exoPD-L1 were associated with better overall survival and progression-free survival. Pretreatment sPD-L1 could be used as an independent prognostic factor for overall survival, while exoPD-L1 may reflect the immunosuppressive state of patients.
