Summary: The presented work describes the synthesis and characterization of a novel magnetic cationic phospholipid (MCP) system with a stable dopamine anchor as well as its transfection activity study. The synthesized architectural system increases the biocompatibility of iron oxide and promises applications of magnetic nanoparticles in living cells. The MCP system is soluble in organic solvents and can be easily adapted to prepare magnetic liposomes. We created complexes with liposomes containing MCP and other functional cationic lipids and pDNA as gene delivery tools, which possessed the ability to enhance the efficiency of transfection, particularly the process of interaction with cells by inducing a magnetic field. The MCP is able to create iron oxide nanoparticles and has the potential for the materials to prepare the system for site-specific gene delivery with the application of an external magnetic field.

Summary: Leishmaniasis is a widespread neglected vector-borne protozoan disease that poses a major public health concern, with 12 million people affected worldwide and 60,000 deaths annually. Current chemotherapies for leishmaniasis have several drawbacks and side effects, prompting the development of new drug delivery systems. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have recently been considered due to their unique characteristics.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of the combination of amphotericin B (AmB) and various non-ionic surfactants on the activity of AmB against Mucorales, the toxicity on eukaryotic cells, and the modification of AmB aggregation states. The results showed that PEG15HS increased the efficacy of AmB against Mucorales without increasing its toxicity.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the physicochemical properties and siRNA delivery capacity of cationic branched maltodextrins with similar degrees of substitution but different degrees of branching. The results showed a significant increase in the ratio of alpha-1,6 glycosidic bonds after dual enzyme treatment. Structural characterization revealed the formation of abundant hyperbranched short clustered structure through 1,4-alpha-glucan branching enzyme (GBEs) hydrolysis. The formation of complexes between cationic maltodextrins and siRNA was confirmed by gel retardation assay and atomic force microscopy, showing a uniform spherical structure with a size close to 300-350 nm. Additionally, cationic branched maltodextrins effectively reduced the change of siRNA secondary structure. These findings suggest that cationic branched maltodextrins have significant potential as siRNA carriers.
