Context. The distance of pulsating stars, in particular Cepheids, are commonly measured using the parallax of pulsation technique. The different versions of this technique combine measurements of the linear diameter variation (from spectroscopy) and the angular diameter variation (from photometry or interferometry) amplitudes, to retrieve the distance in a quasi-geometrical way. However, the linear diameter amplitude is directly proportional to the projection factor (hereafter p-factor), which is used to convert spectroscopic radial velocities (i.e., disk integrated) into pulsating (i.e., photospheric) velocities. The value of the p-factor and its possible dependence on the pulsation period are still widely debated. Aims. Our goal is to measure an observational value of the p-factor of the type-II Cepheid kappa Pavonis. Methods. The parallax of the type-II Cepheid kappa Pav was measured with an accuracy of 5% using HST/FGS. We used this parallax as a starting point to derive the p-factor of kappa Pav, using the SPIPS technique (Spectro-Photo-Interferometry of Pulsating Stars), which is a robust version of the parallax-of-pulsation method that employs radial velocity, interferometric and photometric data. We applied this technique to a combination of new VLTI/PIONIER optical interferometric angular diameters, new CORALIE and HARPS radial velocities, as well as multi-colour photometry and radial velocities from the literature. Results. We obtain a value of p = 1.26 +/- 0.07 for the p-factor of kappa Pav. This result agrees with several of the recently derived Period-p-factor relationships from the literature, as well as previous observational determinations for Cepheids. Conclusions. Individual estimates of the p-factor are fundamental to calibrating the parallax of pulsation distances of Cepheids. Together with previous observational estimates, the projection factor we obtain points to a weak dependence of the p-factor on period.

Relativistic corrections for measuring Hubble's constant to 1% using stellar standard candles

Richard Anderson

Summary: This study estimates relativistic corrections for cosmic distance estimates based on stellar standard candles to achieve an unbiased 1% measurement of Hubble's constant in the future. The results suggest that all stellar standard candle observations require relativistic corrections for accurate distance measurements.

Stellar and substellar companions from Gaia EDR3 Proper-motion anomaly and resolved common proper-motion pairs

Pierre Kervella, Frederic Arenou, Frederic Thevenin

Summary: The multiplicity survey is significantly improved by using a combination of the PMa, CPM, and RUWE indicators, which enhances the exhaustivity of companion detection and improves accuracy. The detection of CPM companions for bright stars provides a useful proxy for estimating their distance with higher accuracy than the HIPPARCOS method.

Do the majority of stars form as gravitationally unbound?

Frantisek Dinnbier, Pavel Kroupa, Richard I. Anderson

Summary: This article discusses the formation of young stars in star clusters or isolated conditions using the Gamma-1 model. The study finds that small changes in assumptions can greatly affect the results and questions the theoretical arguments about low Gamma values in galaxies with lower star formation rates.

On the dynamical evolution of Cepheids in star clusters&x22c6;

Frantisek Dinnbier, Richard Anderson, Pavel Kroupa

Summary: This study investigates the occurrence of Cepheids in star clusters and provides the first detailed dynamical picture of their distribution. The simulations show that only a small fraction of Cepheids reside in clusters, with cluster halo membership being relatively common. The results also predict various characteristics of Cepheids, such as their likelihood to escape from low-mass clusters, the distribution of Cepheids in different mass clusters, and the increase of clustered Cepheid fraction with galactocentric radius.

The iron and oxygen content of LMC Classical Cepheids and its implications for the extragalactic distance scale and Hubble constant Equivalent width analysis with Kurucz stellar atmosphere models

Summary: This study measured the iron and oxygen abundances of classical Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) to understand the influence of chemical composition on their luminosity. The distribution of iron in LMC Cepheids can be accurately described by a single Gaussian, and the uniformity of abundance suggests that they cannot provide meaningful constraints on the dependence of the Cepheid period-luminosity relation on chemical composition at any wavelength.

HARPS-N high spectral resolution observations of Cepheids II. The impact of the surface-brightness color relation on the Baade-Wesselink projection factor of η Aql

Summary: This study quantifies the impact of the surface-brightness color relation (SBCR) on the Baade-Wesselink (BW) projection factor used in distance determination of Cepheids. By analyzing different SBCRs in the literature, it is found that the choice of SBCR has a significant effect on the projection factor, with a scatter of about 8%. Extinction and circumstellar environment have less impact on the projection factor. Efforts should be made to improve the empirical and theoretical SBCR of Cepheids, taking their circumstellar environment into account.

Summary: Kernel phase imaging (KPI) is used to detect substellar companions and circumstellar dust below the diffraction limit. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) provides high-quality images for KPI, and a data reduction pipeline and toolkit have been developed for JWST images. KPI and NIRISS aperture masking interferometry (AMI) perform similarly in observing time, but KPI has higher throughput and is better for observing faint targets at separations greater than 325 mas.

A 0.9% calibration of the Galactic Cepheid luminosity scale based on Gaia DR3 data of open clusters and Cepheids

Mauricio Cruz Reyes, Richard I. I. Anderson

Summary: We conducted a search for open clusters near classical Galactic Cepheids using high-quality astrometry data. Our findings include the identification of new host clusters and the correction of previous associations. By comparing Cepheids in Milky Way clusters to those in the LMC, we confirmed the accuracy of recent parallax corrections. Our results provide the most accurate calibrations of the Cepheid luminosity scale and precise determination of the residual parallax offset.

New evidence about HW Vir's circumbinary planets from Hipparcos-Gaia astrometry and a reanalysis of the eclipse timing variations using nested sampling

Thomas A. Baycroft, Amaury H. M. J. Triaud, Pierre Kervella

Summary: The study suggests the possibility of a circumbinary companion orbiting the common-envelope eclipsing binary HW Virginis, but previous proposed companions have lacked predictability and orbital stability. The analysis also reveals that other periodic signals are likely caused by physical processes on the white dwarf. The full Gaia epoch astrometry data release is expected to provide further confirmation of the existence of circumbinary planets and exploration of white dwarf physics around HW Virginis.
