A hollow porous Mn2O3 microsphere was synthesized by a solvothermal method and loaded with 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) to produce an inhibitor delivery system. Hollow Mn2O3 with porous shell facilitates encapsulation and release of corrosion inhibitors, and the mechanical and chemical stability of Mn2O3 would make it a proper container while applying in self-healing coatings. Furthermore, the release of 8-HQ from Mn2O3 microcontainers was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. The results show that inhibitor is continuously released from the microcontainers, inhibiting the corrosion of aluminum effectively. The microcontainers loaded with inhibitor can be incorporated into coatings to achieve self-healing function. (c) 2013 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.
