Limiting warming to 2 degrees C is critical for avoiding dangerous consequences and adaptive actions are needed to limit damage from climatic changes. There is sharp imbalance in investments in mitigation and adaptation, with the latter attracting barely 5% of the allocated funds. Adaptation is limited not only by restricted access to money and technology, but also by endogenous causes related to willingness to invest in the future, and attitude to risk taking and integration of technology. Models based on paleoecological evidence of early Holocene floral migration can be used for initiating intelligent adaptive actions. Developed countries should concentrate on transformational changes using the latest technologies through their mitigation efforts, rather than crowd out the developing countries from low-cost and low-technology mitigation opportunities in the forestry sector. Confluence of adaptation with mitigation in tropical forests is a challenge yet a possibility, and the UNFCCC mechanisms should actively encourage this overlap.

Dynamic Top Height Growth Models for Eight Native Tree Species in a Cool-Temperate Region in Northeast China

Sandra-Maria Hipler, Heinrich Spiecker, Shuirong Wu

Summary: This study developed dynamic top height growth models for eight important Chinese tree species based on age-height relationships, using commonly growth data from long-term observations. The models showed good fitness and performance for predicting height growth of dominant trees.

The effects of species-composition-oriented silviculture on timber value and carbon - a stand-level case study in subtropical China

Summary: Species selection and composition in afforestation have significant effects on forest characteristics and ecosystem services. In this study, an integrated analysis framework was used to assess the effects of silvicultural options on timber value and carbon sequestration in subtropical China. The uneven-aged mixture showed better carbon sequestration, while the even-aged mixture had better combined benefits of timber production and carbon sequestration over 50 years. The results provide valuable information for stakeholders to make informed decisions regarding stand-level silvicultural options.

Influencing Factors and Measurement of Willingness to Accept Living with Alligators in a Nature Reserve: A Case Study in National Chinese Alligator Nature Reserve, China

Yefei Liu, Gui Meng, Shuirong Wu, Xufeng Zhang, Chengle Zhao, Hongguo Yang

Summary: The establishment of nature reserves is crucial for the protection of Chinese alligators, but conflicts between economic development and ecological protection arise due to overlapping with human living areas. This study used contingent valuation method to measure and analyze residents' willingness to accept compensation and identified factors influencing compensation willingness through decision tree modeling and logistic regression. Results showed that the majority of residents in the study area accepted compensation, with individual characteristics, ecological protection cognition, and external impact being significant factors affecting willingness to accept compensation.

Summary: In this study, nonlinear mixed-effects models and nonlinear models were used to fit growth data of the most important tree species in the Zhongtiaoshan forest region, China. The selected equations and fitting methods serve as crucial tools for forest stand planning in the studied region.
