Summary: Both MPCNL and RPLU have similar surgical success and stone clearance rates in treating impacted proximal ureteral stones larger than 15 mm. However, patients undergoing MPCNL experienced lower post-operative pain and faster recovery than those undergoing RPLU.

Summary: A study evaluated the feasibility and success of medial non-papillary percutaneous access for the treatment of ureteral stones. The results showed a high stone-free rate of 95.8% with a low complication rate. This technique is considered safe and reliable for ureteral stone treatment.

Summary: Analysis of 10 studies revealed that antegrade URSL had a higher stone-free rate compared to retrograde URSL, but with significantly longer hospital stay. There were no significant differences in operation time and overall complication rate between the two approaches.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics and impact of asymptomatic ureteral stones on renal function and compared them with symptomatic stones. The results showed that asymptomatic stones were larger, more commonly present in the upper ureter, and more commonly associated with high-grade hydronephrosis. However, there was no difference in metabolite composition between the two groups. The study also found that silent stones irreversibly impaired renal function, even after proper management, highlighting the need for active treatment strategies for all patients with asymptomatic stones.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the surgical outcomes of proximal ureteral stones and distal ureteral stones. It found that primary ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy is a valid and feasible treatment for proximal ureteral stones, and preliminary ureteral stent insertion seems to be unnecessary.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness, safety, and cost of ultrasound-guided shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) with an early second session protocol and ureteroscopy (URS) in patients with proximal ureteral stones using the propensity score matching (PSM) method based on a large prospective study. The results showed that SWL had equivalent effectiveness but better safety and lower cost compared with URS in the treatment of patients with proximal ureteral stones.

Summary: This study compares the technical success of antegrade uteral stent (AUS) and retrograde ureteral stent (RUS) placements in patients with malignant ureteral obstruction (MUO) and identifies the predictors of technical failure of RUS. The results show that AUS placement had a higher technical success rate compared to RUS placement, and age, ureteral orifice invasion, and extrinsic cancer were independent predictors of RUS technical failure.

Summary: The rate of ureteral stricture formation following ureteroscopy ranges from 0.5% to 5% and it can be as high as 24% in patients with impacted ureteral stones. The main risk factor for ureteral stricture formation is ureteral perforation and/or mucosal damage during retrograde ureteroscopy for impacted ureteral stones.

Summary: The meta-analysis revealed that laparoscopic ureterolithotomy (LU) is a safe and feasible option for large proximal ureteral stones with a higher initial stone-free rate and lower transfusion rate compared with percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL).

Summary: This study compared the outcomes of VADL using FV-UAS with traditional fURL in patients with kidney or proximal ureteral stones less than 3 cm. The VADL group showed significantly higher stone-free rates immediately after the procedure and during follow-up, especially for stones smaller than 2 cm. VADL technique can effectively improve the postoperative stone-free rate for patients with small kidney or proximal ureteral stones.

Summary: This study aims to identify the pre-operative predictors of sepsis in patients with unilateral, solitary, and proximal ureteral stones after flexible ureteroscopy (fURS) and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL). The study found that female gender, pre-operative fever, low serum albumin, positive urine culture, high serum white blood cell count, and fURS as the operation type were associated with an increased risk of postoperative sepsis. Higher albumin levels were identified as a protective factor. A diagnostic model was also constructed and showed good predictive performance.

Summary: The study compared the feasibility and safety of ultra-minimally invasive approaches in gynecology by comparing experiences with percutaneous assisted hysterectomy (PSS-H) and 3 mm mini-laparoscopy hysterectomy (m-LPS-H) in 126 patients. The results showed that there were no significant differences in operative time, estimated blood loss, and use of uterine manipulator between the two groups, but m-LPS-H group had significantly less post-operative pain. After 30 days, there were no significant differences in cosmetic satisfaction between the two groups.

Summary: For patients with proximal ureteral stones larger than 10 mm, receiving URS after failed SWL sessions may lead to increased intra-operative complications, longer operating and hospitalization times, and the need for further treatments. It is suggested that an acceptable number of SWL sessions before URS is not recommended, as it does not significantly reduce complications.

Summary: Results of this study suggest that anterior shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) for upper ureteral calculi is more effective than posterior SWL, requiring less power and treatment sessions. Post-SWL pain, hematuria, obstruction, and infection were also significantly lower in the anterior group. Patients who underwent anterior SWL had a better chance of achieving stone-free rate.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the surgical techniques and challenges of laparoscopic treatment for pediatric ureteral polyps in 7 patients. The results showed that laparoscopy is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive surgical technique for treating multiple ureteral polyps in children, with good postoperative outcomes.

Summary: ReDo BMGU achieved a success rate of 84.3% in patients with recurrent anterior urethral stricture following failed primary BMGU. Compared to the failure group, patients with longer pre-ReDo BMGU stricture length were more likely to experience unsuccessful outcomes. Only one patient reported persistent oral numbness as a postoperative complication within the first year, while overall oral morbidity and quality of life improved significantly following surgery.
