Summary: This article discusses the ethical and clinical implications of newborn cCMV screening programs. On one hand, early cCMV detection can provide developmental advantages and support broader treatment approaches. On the other hand, there are shortcomings in available testing platforms and concerns about overdiagnosis and overtreatment. The article also mentions the risks of parental anxiety and vulnerable child syndrome as barriers to screening.

Summary: Background: Consanguineous couples have an increased risk of severe diseases in offspring due to autosomal recessive disorders. Exome sequencing (ES) offers the possibility of extensive preconception carrier screening (PCS) in consanguineous couples who may be at risk of rare genetic disorders. Methods: We retrospectively analysed ES data from 65 probands affected with rare genetic disorders born from consanguineous couples, exploring diagnostic yield and carrier status for recessive disorders.

Summary: Screening salt-tolerant rice genotypes using a variety of methods, M-19 was identified as the most suitable candidate for breeding salt-tolerant high-yielding rice varieties due to its excellent yield response and salt tolerance. The accuracy and reliability of these methods were ensured by principal component analysis and seedling stage molecular assay.

Summary: A substantial proportion of Chinese women planning pregnancy were susceptible to cytomegalovirus before conception, with low to moderate levels of immunoglobulin G seropositivity and significant geographic variation. Regional differences in seropositivity should be considered in the integration of cytomegalovirus antibody testing in preconception screening programs to develop prevention strategies targeting congenital infections.

Summary: In the era of omics, various fields have been identified, including genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, phenomics, and metagenomics. Metagenomics, among them, has significantly contributed to discoveries related to the microbial world. Newly discovered microbiomes in different ecologies provide valuable information on microbial diversity and functions on Earth. Therefore, metagenomics has led to new microbe-based applications in human health, agriculture, and the food industry. This review summarizes recent advances in bioinformatic tools and explores the current applications of metagenomics in various fields. Furthermore, it discusses the future perspectives of metagenomics as a powerful tool for studying the microbial world.

Summary: Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the US, with different types varying in incidence and severity. Basal and squamous cell carcinomas are the most common types, while melanomas cause the most skin cancer deaths. Melanoma is 30 times more common in white people than black people, but darker-skinned individuals are often diagnosed at later stages.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a significant cause of cancer-related deaths, with high incidence in adults aged 65 to 74. Screening is recommended for adults aged 50 to 75 with substantial net benefit, for those aged 45 to 49 with moderate net benefit, and selective screening is advised for adults aged 76 to 85.

Summary: Gestational diabetes is a common condition during pregnancy in the US, with significant risks for both mothers and infants. The USPSTF recommends screening for gestational diabetes at 24 weeks of gestation or after to improve outcomes for both mother and fetus, but finds insufficient evidence to recommend screening before 24 weeks.

Summary: The article discusses the importance of atrial fibrillation (AF) as the most common cardiac arrhythmia and its association with ischemic stroke. Summary: The high false positive rate hinders the efficiency of lung cancer screening. Applying artificial intelligence to radiomics can help discard benign cases from CT scan analysis. However, the limited amount of available data and the low number of benign cases pose challenges to using state-of-the-art methods like deep learning, which may be biased, over-fitted, and lack clinical reproducibility. This study proposes a hybrid approach that combines the potential of radiomic features and the generalization of feed forward networks. By embedding nodules based on the statistical significance of radiomic features, the proposed method achieves maximal reproducibility with minimal training data. The best model achieves 100% sensitivity and 83% specificity (AUC = 0.94) for malignancy detection on an independent set of patients.

However, augmentation of labor with oxytocin, epidural analgesia, and birth weight of the newborn less than 4000 g at P2 were associated with successful induction of labor.

Summary: The study found that prior VBAC can predict the success rate of TOLAC and the rate of uterine rupture, but as a single variable, its predictive value is low. Women with prior VBAC had a higher VBAC success rate compared to those with prior VD, but a lower rate of uterine rupture. The number of prior VDs did not improve predictive accuracy.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the accuracy of sonographic versus birthweight curves in diagnosing fetal growth restriction and to compare maternal and neonatal outcomes based on these two approaches. The study found that pregnancies classified as appropriate for gestational age based on birthweight curves but classified as growth restricted based on sonographic curves had higher rates of small for gestational age and poor perinatal outcomes, similar to pregnancies classified as growth restricted based on birthweight curves. Furthermore, the use of sonographic curves increased the sensitivity for detecting small for gestational age neonates.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between the duration of the second stage of labor in twin pregnancies and adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. The results suggest that a prolonged second stage of labor may increase the risk of adverse maternal outcomes, especially in nulliparous women. Further large-scale studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: The study aimed to identify risk factors for complicated maternal cesarean delivery (CD) in women undergoing a repeat low-order CD and to develop a predictive model for at-risk women. The results showed that a complicated CD2, Sub-Saharan African origin, and preterm delivery were risk factors for complications in CD3. However, it is difficult to predict which specific women will experience these complications. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of a complicated CD2 for detecting complications in CD3 were 21%, 90%, 30%, and 85%, respectively.

Summary: Intrapartum fever accompanied by certain symptoms is classified as suspected triple 1, which is the hallmark of intraamniotic infection (IAI). However, the clinical diagnosis of IAI has poor specificity, leading to unnecessary treatment. This study evaluated the use of specific acute phase reactants (APRs) to detect bacterial IAI among suspected triple 1 cases, but their effectiveness was not sufficient, as indicated by the poor area under the receiver operating characteristic curve.
