Personalizing Breast Cancer Screening Based on Polygenic Risk and Family History

Summary: Breast cancer family history and polygenic risk score can guide screening decisions for women aged 30-50 years. Combining family history and PRS has greater benefits in terms of life-years gained and breast cancer deaths averted compared to biennial screening from 50 to 74 years old.

Do we measure or compute polygenic risk scores? Why language matters

Bart Penders, A. Cecile J. W. Janssens

Summary: Polygenic risk scores (PRS) are distinct from other biomarkers as they are calculated, compiled or constructed through the statistical assemblage of genetic variants. How researchers frame and name PRSs impacts how we interpret and value their results. Important questions include what PRS seeks to represent, whether current ways of 'doing PRS' are optimal and responsible, and the basis for the credibility of PRS-based knowledge claims.

Advancing translational science education

Jessica M. Faupel-Badger, Amanda L. Vogel, Christopher P. Austin, Joni L. Rutter

Summary: This article offers considerations for developing new educational opportunities for a diverse and skilled translational science workforce based on decades of advances and experiential knowledge. It emphasizes the need for new education approaches that distill key concepts and practices in translational science from past and ongoing research initiatives. The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) has developed guiding principles for translational science and is disseminating them through new education activities aiming to reach a broad scientific audience.
