Land surface displacement is a phenomenon of ground movement, which may occur due to various reasons including unplanned mining. The quantification of land surface displacement through conventional field surveys is based on sparingly distributed point data, which may be insufficient for many applications. A detailed spatial and temporal monitoring of land surface displacements through remote sensing-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry may be valuable. Over the last two decades, differential SAR interferometry (DInSAR) has been effectively used globally for the estimation of spatial land surface displacements caused due to natural and man-made hazards. However, it has not gained momentum in India, where occurrences of natural and man-made hazards are a common phenomenon. In this article, preliminary results from DInSAR to measure land surface displacement in Jharia coal fields have been presented. DInSAR results effectively identified the land surface displacement due to several mining activities in the region during a one-month period.

Summary: Ice cliffs are crucial for the mass balance of debris-covered glaciers, but assessing their importance is hindered by the lack of large-scale datasets. New semi-automated methods utilizing multispectral imaging have been developed to map ice cliffs from glacier to regional scales, showing promising results for application in diverse geographical and seasonal conditions.

The presence and influence of glacier surging around the Geladandong ice caps, North East Tibetan Plateau

Owen King, Atanu Bhattacharya, Tobias Bolch

Summary: This study examined glacier surging at the Geladandong ice caps on the Tibetan Plateau and identified 19 surge-type outlet glaciers. It was found that the mass budgets of surge-type glaciers vary depending on the portion of the surge-cycle captured by geodetic data. The results highlight the importance of accurate surge-type glacier inventories and the need for maximizing geodetic data coverage over glacierised regions containing surge-type glaciers.

High Mountain Asian glacier response to climate revealed by multi-temporal satellite observations since the 1960s

Summary: The study highlights the increasing glacier mass loss rates in High Mountain Asia since the 1960s, with the highest rates observed in Central Himalaya and Northern Tien Shan regions. Summer temperature increase is identified as the main driver of long-term mass loss trend, even in regions where glaciers were previously in balance with climate. Multi-platform satellite observations over six decades reveal widespread glacier mass loss across High Mountain Asia, reflecting regional climatic differences.

Influence of climate and non-climatic attributes on declining glacier mass budget and surging in Alaknanda Basin and its surroundings

Summary: Glaciers are rapidly shrinking globally, posing a threat to the sustainability of meltwater and altering regional hydrology. This study estimates the multi-temporal mass balance of glaciers in the upper Alaknanda basin and neighboring transboundary glaciers, and identifies the influence of climatic and non-climatic factors on ice loss. The findings highlight the significant impact of summer temperature on glacier mass budget and suggest that smaller glaciers may disappear in the coming decades if current climate trends continue.

A Pipeline for Automated Processing of Declassified Corona KH-4 (1962-1972) Stereo Imagery

Summary: This article introduces the Corona Stereo Pipeline (CoSP) for processing Corona KH-4 stereo panoramic imagery. The pipeline utilizes the SuperGlue feature matcher to automatically match feature points, generates ground control points (GCPs), and employs a modified collinearity equations camera model to model the imaging geometry. The study demonstrates that using CoSP with well-distributed GCPs and preprocessing for film bending can result in accurate 3D reconstruction. Furthermore, the Corona DEM computed with CoSP showed promising results for computing long-term glacier elevation changes over large areas.
