Summary: This study found altered immune function and gut microbiota in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), and the severity of autistic symptoms was higher in the high IFN-gamma group. Analysis of gut microbiota revealed overrepresentation of certain bacterial species and underrepresentation of others in the high IFN-gamma group. The results suggest that IFN-gamma level could serve as a potential biomarker to subtype ASD individuals and understanding the associations among immune function, gut microbiota, and metabolism abnormalities could lead to personalized biomedical treatment for ASD.

Summary: Autistic individuals are more likely than non-autistic individuals to experience externalising and internalising symptoms, which may vary with environmental factors. This study analyzed data from European and South African cohorts and found that the "Family System" factor was associated with internalising and externalising symptoms in both cohorts, with different effects in individuals with high autistic traits.

Summary: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by social deficits, repetitive behaviors, and altered inflammatory responses. This study found that ASD children have decreased levels of lipoxin A4 (LXA4), a mediator involved in inflammation resolution. Activation of the receptor FPR2 by a compound called MR-39 had positive effects on inflammation markers, LXA4 expression, and social behavior in validated animal models of ASD. These findings suggest that FPR2 could be a potential target for therapeutic approaches in ASD.

Summary: Early comprehensive treatment models (CTMs) have shown positive effects on short-term and long-term outcomes for children with ASD, particularly in symptoms and language. The ESDM has a significant impact on IQ improvement, while EIBI is more effective in symptom reduction. Factors such as parent involvement, treatment intensity, and total treatment hours can positively affect the developmental gains of children with ASD.

Summary: This study aims to identify sleep disorders in preschool children with ASD and explore their relationship with core symptoms, developmental level, and comorbidities. The results showed that sleep disorders were associated with emotional-behavioral problems and psychiatric comorbidities. Therefore, early screening and intervention for sleep problems should be part of the routine clinical practice for children with ASD.

Summary: The study indicated that training school providers to deliver cognitive behavioral therapy may help to have a broader impact on autistic students. The program is suitable for different types of students and has a positive effect on their school participation. The importance of flexibility in program implementation and task sharing is highlighted for public schools.

Summary: This study evaluated the embryotoxic effect of Valproic acid (VPA) using the zebrafish model and investigated the potential of cannabidiol as an alternative drug to mitigate the adverse effects of VPA. The results showed that zebrafish simultaneously treated with VPA and cannabidiol displayed similar survival rates and heart rates compared to the untreated control group.

Summary: Several studies have found a correlation between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and catatonia, both of which are also associated with mood disorders. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between autistic traits and catatonic symptoms, as well as the potential mediating role of mood disorder spectrum. The results showed strong positive correlations, with the strongest coefficient observed between AdAS Spectrum total score and CS total score. Mediation analysis revealed that the mood disorder spectrum had a significant indirect effect on the relationship between autistic traits and catatonic symptoms.

Summary: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may have a higher likelihood of constipation and medication use compared to children with other developmental-behavioral disorders. Providers should ask thorough questions to identify constipation and gather information from both caregivers and children if possible. Clinicians should tailor behavioral treatment recommendations to address caregiver concerns.

Summary: Various methods have been used to measure parent responsiveness to children with autism or elevated likelihood of autism, leading to difficulties in comparing results across studies. This scoping review analyzed 101 articles to summarize the behavioral coding methods used, highlight strengths and weaknesses in reporting, and propose a best practice model for coding and reporting standards. The review revealed variations in procedures, measurement forms, and aspects of responsiveness measured, and emphasized the need for clear definitions and replicable research protocols.

Summary: Current treatments for ASD are limited in efficacy, leading to the need for novel experimental therapeutics. The endocannabinoid system may play a role in the pathogenesis of ASD, making phytocannabinoids a potential effective treatment for core symptoms.

Summary: Sleep disorders are common in children with autism spectrum disorder (autism), but the relationship between clinical features of autism and sleep disorders is unclear. This study examined this relationship and found that lower adaptive behaviors and sensory issues were associated with more severe sleep problems in autistic children. The findings highlight the importance of a holistic assessment and appropriate sleep intervention for autistic children.

Summary: The study found that children with higher severity levels of ASD symptoms had lower adaptive functioning, and parental stress levels were related to the severity of ASD symptoms, fewer adaptive skills, and a greater presence of internalizing and externalizing problems.

Summary: Despite having strong evidence, Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBIs) are not widely implemented in early intervention programs for children with autism. The slow adoption may be due to different theoretical orientations and a lack of training and support. Efforts should be made to clarify the features, address misconceptions, and provide recommendations to promote wide-scale implementation.

Summary: This study examines the correlation between the ST8SIA2 gene and autistic behavioral symptoms. It finds that the ST8SIA2 gene expression levels are lower in ASD children compared to the control group, and that these expression levels are negatively associated with stereotyped behaviors. Methylation levels of specific gene sites are also higher in ASD children and positively correlated with stereotyped behaviors. This provides a scientific basis to understand the relationship between the ST8SIA2 gene and behavioral phenotypes of ASD.

Summary: This study examined changes in attitudes towards medical cannabis regulation and pharmacist involvement in dispensing after the availability of medical cannabis products in Arkansas. The findings showed an increase in preference for less regulation and a decrease in agreement with the pharmacist's role in improving safety. Pharmacists need to promote their role in public health safety and demonstrate their knowledge of medical cannabis.
