Purpose The present study evaluated whether oral supplementation with a branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) improves the biochemical and amino acid profiles of liver tumor patients undergoing radiotherapy. Materials and Methods Patients were randomly assigned to one of 2 groups: a group given oral supplementation with BCAA granules (LIVACT granules; Samil Pharm Co., Korea, each granule containing L-isoleucine 952 mg, L-leucine 1,904 mg, and L-valine 1,144 mg) during radiotherapy, or a placebo group. Physical and biochemical examinations and measurements, including subjective symptoms, Child-Pugh class, body mass index, plasma albumin concentration, and plasma amino acid profiles were monitored. Results Fifty were enrolled between November 2005 and November 2006. We also analyzed data from 37 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients in order to evaluate a more homogenous group. The two groups of patients were comparable in terms of age, gender, Child-Pugh score, and underlying hepatitis virus type. Serum albumin, total protein, liver enzymes, and cholesterol showed a tendency to increase in the BCAA group. In this group, the percentage of cases that reverted to normal serum albumin levels between 3 and 10 weeks after administration of BCAA was significantly higher (41.18%) than in the placebo group (p=0.043). Conclusion Oral supplementation with a BCAA preparation seems to help HCC patients undergoing radiotherapy by increasing the BCAA concentration.

Yiseul Choi, Heajeong Park, Namki Hong, Yumie Rhee, Wonse Park

Summary: This study examines the communication problems and current status of communication methods between patients, dentists, and physicians for the prevention and treatment of MRONJ. It identifies the lack of medical knowledge among patients, as well as the lack of expertise between dentists and physicians. The study also highlights the dissatisfaction of patients with the current communication system via letters and the need for more effective communication according to dentists and physicians.

Increased risk of incident diabetes after therapy with immune checkpoint inhibitor compared with conventional chemotherapy: A longitudinal trajectory analysis using a tertiary care hospital database

Minyoung Lee, Kyeongseob Jeong, Yu Rang Park, Yumie Rhee

Summary: ICI therapy is associated with an increased risk of incident diabetes compared with CC. The glucose levels of patients treated with an ICI, especially males and those with prominent lymphocytosis after ICI treatment, need to be monitored regularly to detect ICI-associated diabetes as early as possible.

Exploratory use of romosozumab for osteoporosis in a patient with Hajdu-Cheney syndrome: a case report

K. J. Kim, N. Hong, S. Lee, S. Shin, Y. Rhee

Summary: Hajdu-Cheney syndrome (HCS) is a rare inherited skeletal disorder caused by mutations in the NOTCH2 gene. Current treatment options for HCS are limited, and previous reports have shown limited efficacy with other medications. This case report presents the first evidence of romosozumab treatment for HCS in Korea, showing significant improvements in bone mineral density and reduced markers of bone turnover. These findings suggest that romosozumab may be a promising treatment option for HCS patients with osteoporosis.

Selective Inhibition of PI3K Isoforms in Brain Tumors Suppresses Tumor Growth by Increasing Radiosensitivity

Mi Youn Seol, Seo Hee Choi, Ik Jae Lee, Hyung Soon Park, Hye Ryun Kim, Sang Kyum Kim, Hong In Yoon

Summary: This study investigated whether selective inhibition of PI3K isoforms could enhance radiosensitivity in GBM. The results from cell experiments and a mouse model demonstrated that inhibition of PI3K-alpha isoform increased radiosensitivity in GBM cells, leading to tumor growth suppression and extended survival in vivo.

In-depth proteomic signature of parathyroid carcinoma

Sung Hye Kong, Joon-Hyop Lee, Jeong Mo Bae, Namki Hong, Hyeyoon Kim, So Young Park, Yong Jun Choi, Sihoon Lee, Yumie Rhee, Sang Wan Kim, Dohyun Han, Jung Hee Kim, Chan Soo Shin

Summary: This study aimed to identify protein signatures for the diagnosis of parathyroid carcinoma (PC) through quantitative proteomic analyses. It identified 5 proteins that can discriminate PC from parathyroid adenoma (PA) and found that the nuclear percentage of carbonic anhydrase 4 and laminin subunit beta-2 was significantly lower in PC tissue. The findings of this study can contribute to the accurate diagnosis of PC and the discovery of potential therapeutic targets.

Jump Power Predicts Fracture Risk in Older Adults Independent of Sarcopenia and FRAX

Namki Hong, Seung Won Burm, Hyeon Chang Kim, Chang Oh Kim, Yumie Rhee

Summary: Low countermovement jump power is associated with prevalent fracture, osteoporosis, and sarcopenia in older adults. However, whether jump power predicts incident fracture risk remains uninvestigated. This study found that low jump power is associated with a higher risk of fracture in older adults and can predict fracture risk independently of sarcopenia and osteoporosis.

Summary: X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is a rare, inherited, multisystem disorder characterized by hypophosphatemia that occurs secondary to renal phosphate wasting. XLH has a significant impact on physical function, mobility, and quality of life, and is associated with substantial socioeconomic burden and health care resource utilization. This study aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for optimizing XLH care in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) context.

Namki Hong, Jung Ho Kim, Graham Treece, Hyeon Chang Kim, Jun Yong Choi, Yumie Rhee

Summary: Middle-aged men living with human immunodeficiency virus (MLWH) have a significantly higher risk of hip fracture, almost a decade earlier than those without infection. Limited data on cortical and trabecular bone deficit in MLWH were observed. This study found that MLWH had lower hip bone density and deficits in certain bone parameters compared to age and body mass index-matched controls.

Genomic and transcriptomic profiling reveal molecular characteristics of parathyroid carcinoma

Se-Young Jo, Namki Hong, Seunghyun Lee, Jong Ju Jeong, Jeongsoo Won, Jiho Park, Gi Jeong Kim, Sang Kyum Kim, Sangwoo Kim, Yumie Rhee

Summary: Genomic and transcriptomic profiling of parathyroid tissues revealed multiple two-hit mutation patterns in the CDC73 gene, suggesting potential therapeutic targets. Transcriptomic analysis identified upregulated expression of E2F targets, KRAS and TNF-alpha signaling, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition pathways in parathyroid carcinomas. A molecular classification model based on carcinoma-specific genes could effectively distinguish between carcinomas, adenomas, and normal tissues, with potential clinical utility.
