Being socially connected directly impacts our basic needs and survival. People with deficits in social cognition might exhibit abnormal behaviors and face many challenges in our highly social-dependent world. These challenges and limitations are associated with a substantial economical and subjective impact. As many conditions where social cognition is affected are highly prevalent, more treatments have to be developed. Based on recent research, we review studies where non-invasive neuromodulatory techniques have been used to promote Social Plasticity in developmental disorders. We focused on three populations where non-invasive brain stimulation seems to be a promising approach in inducing social plasticity: Schizophrenia, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Williams Syndrome (WS). There are still very few studies directly evaluating the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in the social cognition of these populations. However, when considering the promising preliminary evidences presented in this review and the limited amount of clinical interventions available for treating social cognition deficits in these populations today, it is clear that the social neuroscientist arsenal may profit from non-invasive brain stimulation techniques for rehabilitation and promotion of social plasticity.

Efficacy of non-invasive brain stimulation in decreasing depression symptoms during the peripartum period: A systematic review

Summary: Currently, there is insufficient research on the effectiveness, safety, and acceptability of NIBS in treating peripartum depression. While repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation shows promising results and good acceptability in treating PPD, caution is advised during pregnancy. Evidence on the efficacy of transcranial electric stimulation mostly derives from single-arm studies, requiring further investigation.

Promising protein biomarkers in the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a multifactorial disease that leads to cognitive impairments through the devastation of neurons, with proteins playing a crucial role. Efforts are being made to target proteins like amyloid precursor protein and tau protein for developing effective anti-AD therapies. The importance of proteins in the early diagnosis and treatment of AD is emphasized in current research.

Altruistic helping in young children with ASD: A preliminary study

Mirella Manfredi, Elisabete Fernandes Rodrigues Pereira, Julia Horta Tabosa do Egito, Julia Scarano de Mendonca, Ana Alexandra Caldas Osorio

Summary: The study found that young children with ASD engage less frequently in altruistic behavior compared to those with Down syndrome. It also showed a significant negative correlation between the severity of autism symptoms and altruistic behavior in the ASD group. Nonverbal IQ level did not show significant correlations with performance in altruistic behavior tasks for either group. Overall, the study suggests that regardless of intellectual skills, the ability to engage in altruistic behavior is compromised in young children with ASD.

Information and communication technology adoption among the older people: A qualitative approach

Summary: In developing countries like India, older people's acceptance and use of ICT is limited. This qualitative study explored the needs, attitudes, and perceived limitations of ICT platforms among older people. The findings suggest that psychological factors such as anxiety, motivation, interest, and self-efficacy play a role in older people's technology acceptance. User-friendly interfaces and technology training may enhance technology acceptance among older users.

'Treading the no woman's land': the gender-STEM dynamics in higher education in premier institutions of India

Sucharita Maji, Sharmili Mitra, Manish Kumar Asthana

Summary: This research aims to explore the gender dimension of STEM in India's premier institutions. Through in-depth interviews with twenty female doctoral/postdoctoral researchers, it reveals that individual and contextual factors greatly influence their decision to pursue higher studies in STEM. Furthermore, it shows that gendering in STEM leads to self-doubt and diminished sense of belonging among the researchers.

Summary: This study developed a database of photos and videos of 4-to-6-year-olds expressing seven universal emotions and a neutral expression. The findings show that this database can facilitate research on early childhood recognition of facial emotions and contribute to understanding facial emotion recognition deficits in neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders.
