Objectives: To determine semen quality and reproductive hormone levels in young Faroese men. Design: Descriptive cross-sectional study of Faroese men compared with Danish men. Setting: Faroese one-centre study. Participants: 481 men born from 1981 to 1987 and investigated from 2007 to 2010. Outcome measures: Sperm concentration, semen volume, total sperm count, sperm motility, sperm morphology and reproductive hormone levels. Results: Sperm concentrations for the Faroese men were lower than for the Danish men (crude median 40 vs 48 mill/ml, p<0.0005). Semen volume was higher, and thus the total sperm counts did not differ (159 vs 151 mill, p=0.2). Motility and morphology did not differ between the Faroese and Danes. The inhibin B/follicle-stimulating hormone ratios for the Faroese men were lower than for the Danes (64 vs 76, p=0.001). Similarly, lower total testosterone/luteinising hormone (LH) ratio (4.6 vs 6.0, p<0.0005) and lower calculated free-testosterone/LH ratio (94 vs 134, p<0.0005) were detected for the Faroese men. Conclusions: Semen quality among the Faroese men is at the same low level as reported for Danish men, and the reproductive hormone levels furthermore indicated a lower Leydig cell capacity for testosterone production. The influence of environmental exposure and genetic factors on semen quality has to be studied further.

Summary: This nationwide longitudinal study investigated long-term humoral immunity to SARS-CoV-2. After 15 months, 94% of individuals still had detectable antibodies, mainly IgG, and 92% had detectable neutralizing antibodies. The strength of the antibody response was influenced by smoking and hospitalization, with lower IgG levels in smokers and higher levels in hospitalized individuals. Antibody stability over time was mainly associated with male sex and older age with higher initial levels but more marked decrease.

Summary: This study is the first to report the identification of microbiome species in the seminal plasma of men with TGCT and GCNIS-only, and has found some species differences that may be involved in the pathogenesis of TGCTs. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: Men with high-risk, non-metastatic prostate cancer receive adjuvant androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for at least 2 years according to Danish guidelines. It remains unclarified if patients regain the function of the pituitary-testis axis after cessation of ADT. Our study investigated the function of the pituitary-testis axis following adjuvant ADT and found that persistent testosterone deficiency (TD) is a common long-term consequence, equally distributed between pituitary and testicular dysfunction. The study emphasizes the necessity for systematic follow-up of full pituitary-testis axis function in patients receiving adjuvant ADT.

Self-Reported Asthma Is Associated with Reduced Sperm Count-A Cross-Sectional Study of More than 6000 Young Men from the General Population

Marc K. Pedersen, Elvira V. Brauner, Ann H. Hansen, Laura S. Hansen, Tina K. Jensen, Niels Jorgensen, Laerke Priskorn

Summary: In this cross-sectional study, the association between self-reported asthma and testicular function was investigated. The results showed that men with self-reported asthma had poorer testicular function, specifically lower total sperm count and borderline lower sperm concentration compared to men without asthma. However, the causality cannot be determined due to the study's design limitations.

Urinary excretion of phthalates and the substitutes DINCH and DEHTP in Danish young men and German young adults between 2000 and 2017-A time trend analysis

Nina Vogel, Hanne Frederiksen, Rosa Lange, Niels Jorgensen, Holger M. Koch, Till Weber, Anna-Maria Andersson, Marike Kolossa-Gehring

Summary: It has been observed over the past 25 years that exposure to certain phthalates can have negative effects on human health, such as disrupting the endocrine system. As a result, the EU implemented regulations which led to a decrease in production of restricted phthalates and an increase in the production of substitutes. A recent study examined the impact of these regulations on exposure patterns in two European populations.

Summary: This study found that low serum selenium levels during pregnancy, particularly low selenoprotein P (SELENOP) and glutathione peroxidase 3 (GPX3) activity, were associated with an increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and large for gestational-age offspring. Offering selenium status assessment during pregnancy can identify high-risk women for GDM who may benefit from selenium substitution.

Summary: The knowledge about the effects of organophosphate flame retardants on children's neurodevelopment is limited. This research aimed to evaluate the association between exposure to these flame retardants and children's neurodevelopment. The study found a small, negative trend between neurodevelopment and exposure to BDCIPP and DPHP, but the evidence is limited. Further investigations are needed to explore the timing of exposure and the effect of other metabolites.

Summary: Iodine nutrition is critical for human health. This study focused on iodine nutrition among teenagers in the Faroe Islands, where younger generations tend to abandon local foods. The study found that Faroese teenagers were iodine-replete, but the changing dietary habits emphasize the need for continuous monitoring and surveying of iodine nutrition and deficiency disorders.
