Summary: The overall incidence rates of atrial fibrillation in the adult Norwegian population remained stable from 2004 to 2014, with the exception of a yearly increase in the 18-44 age group. The prevalence of atrial fibrillation at the end of 2014 was 3.4% in the adult population. Signs of increasing incidence of early-onset atrial fibrillation (<45 years) are concerning and require further investigation.

Summary: The study found that the cumulative prevalence of atrial fibrillation in the Danish population is around 3.0%, but the incidence has decreased since 2015. Methodological choices, particularly regarding the strictness of case definition and the length of the washout period, substantially influence the reported estimates.

Summary: This study evaluated the incidence, outcomes, and causative agents of bloodstream infections in Finland from 2004 to 2018. The incidence of BSI increased annually, especially among those aged 80 years and older. While the 1-month case-fatality rate decreased, the 1-month all-cause mortality rate rose due to an increase in BSIs caused by multidrug-resistant microbes such as extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing E. coli. Additional efforts are needed to address the rising trend of community-acquired BSIs and antimicrobial drug-resistant pathogens.

Summary: The ADDM Network monitored ASD among 8-year-old children based on text descriptions from medical and educational evaluations between 2000 and 2016. A new case definition developed in 2018 showed similar prevalence to the previous definition, with improved sensitivity and positive predictive value.

Summary: This study analyzed 10 years of surveillance data on listeriosis in Germany, showing an increasing trend in case counts over time. The case-fatality rate was 13% in non-pregnancy-associated cases, with a higher proportion in adults aged 65 and older. Efforts to detect, investigate, and control outbreaks may have the greatest impact on reducing incidence.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the incidence and prevalence of recurrent corneal erosion syndrome (RCES) within the London population over a 5-year period. The results showed an annual incidence rate of 25.4 per 100,000 and a prevalence rate of 0.96%. There was no significant change in the annual incidence over the study period.

Summary: Population ageing is a global social phenomenon where the risk of dementia may be changing in certain countries and areas. This systematic review examined recent observations of a possible decrease in dementia frequency in some Western countries between 1977 and 2014. The studies included had heterogeneity in clinical criteria and methodological quality.

Summary: This study analyzes the trend of urolithiasis incidence rate in 204 countries from 1990 to 2019. The results show that most countries experienced an increasing trend in urolithiasis incidence rate, with Eastern Europe, Central Europe, and Southeast Asia being the exceptions. The Caribbean region and Central Asia had the highest increasing rates, while African regions also showed significant increases over time.

Summary: Liverpool has a high prevalence of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) compared with the rest of the UK. This study analyzed electronic health records over a 5-year period to identify changes in AUD incidence and prevalence in primary care. The findings showed a decrease in diagnoses over time and lower prescription rates for pharmacotherapy, especially in deprived areas. Overall, the identification and management of AUDs in primary care in Liverpool are suboptimal. Rating: 8/10.

Summary: The incidence of hepatitis A in mainland China showed a continuous decreasing trend from 2004 to 2017, with disparities in incidence rates across different regions and age groups narrowing over time. It is recommended to focus on children, elderly individuals, and residents in certain regions for hepatitis A prevention and control strategies.
