Summary: This study aimed to assess the incidence and risk factors of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). A nationwide cohort study was conducted in Taiwan, including 1379 SSc patients and 2758 non-SSc individuals. The study found that SSc was associated with increased risk of myocardial infarction and peripheral arterial occlusion disease, but not of ischaemic stroke. Age, gender, residential area, valvular heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and the use of clopidogrel and aspirin were identified as independent risk factors for MACEs in SSc patients. The findings of this study are clinically significant in understanding the risk factors for MACEs in SSc patients.

Summary: This study investigated the association between mental disorders and the risk of myocardial infarction (MI) and ischaemic stroke (IS) in young patients. The results showed that patients with mental disorders had a higher risk of MI and IS. Prevention efforts should be made to reduce cardiovascular diseases in these patients.

Summary: This study assessed the incidence rate of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with unrepaired abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and their association with modifiable risk factors (diabetes, hypertension) and medication use (aspirin, statins). The study found a high incidence of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction (MI), and stroke in patients with unrepaired AAA, but the prescription rate of preventive medication was suboptimal. Therefore, greater emphasis should be placed on secondary prevention measures in this population.

Summary: The study found an increased risk of undiagnosed cancer at 12 months after arterial thrombotic events (ATE), especially in patients without documented vascular risk factors or pre-existing cardiovascular disease. The relative risk of cancer was high in all subgroups, with the highest hazard ratio observed in patients without cardiovascular risk factors.

Summary: This study aims to understand the sex-specific lifetime trajectories of different heart and circulatory disorders and their relationship with death from heart disease. The results of the study show that men have a higher lifetime risk of heart and circulatory disorders compared with women. Men are more likely to experience myocardial infarction as the first manifestation, while women are more likely to develop atrial fibrillation and stroke after a certain age. The excess risk of death from heart disease observed in men with pre-existing heart disease is attenuated compared with those free of heart disease at baseline. In conclusion, our study highlights the marked sex disparities in heart disease and death over the very long-term, emphasizing the need for tailored heart disease prevention efforts for both men and women.

Summary: This large prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the associations between depression, low socioeconomic status (SES), and the risk of major cardiovascular events (MCVE). The study found that depression, low education, high deprivation, and low income were individually associated with increased risks of MCVE. Depression was associated with increased risks of MCVE in individuals with both high and low SES, with particularly high risks among those living in areas of high deprivation.

Summary: This study assessed the psychometric properties of the ten-item Anxiety Symptom Scale (ASS) using Rasch analysis. The results showed that, after modifying the scoring system, the ASS demonstrated effective measurement of anxiety symptoms. The study found no significant differential item functioning for sex, age group, and educational level. However, the total ASS was poorly targeted for the overall sample, indicating low reliability, and may be more suitable for use in clinical samples.

Summary: The study shows that persons with new-onset anaemia detected in general practice have a high risk of cancer, with a significantly higher risk for 'combined inflammatory iron deficiency anaemia' and 'anaemia of inflammation'. Increased awareness and action are needed for anaemia as a sign of cancer, and there is a call for research to improve initial pathway for new-onset anaemia in general practice.

Summary: The assessment of psychological well-being and euthymia is becoming increasingly important in clinical psychology and psychiatry. This study aimed to evaluate the cross-cultural validity and sensitivity of different versions of the WHO-5 and ES. The findings suggest that the WHO-5 can be used for cross-cultural comparisons in international studies, and the ES can serve as a cross-cultural screening tool.

Summary: This study investigated the association between the initiation of antidepressant treatment and public sick leave compensation (PLSC) in Denmark. The results showed that mirtazapine and mianserin were associated with the highest risk of PLSC in the year following treatment initiation, while citalopram, venlafaxine, and duloxetine were associated with increased PLSC. In contrast, paroxetine, fluoxetine, and vortioxetine were associated with a significantly lower risk of PLSC.

Summary: Many studies have been conducted to investigate psychological distress, but there is still debate on how to define and measure this phenomenon. Clinimetrics, the science of clinical measurements, may offer insights on conceptualizing and assessing psychological distress. A study used Rasch analysis to validate the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) as a measure of underlying dimensions of psychological distress. The findings suggest that the SCL-90-R total score doesn't fit the Rasch model but is reliable, and the subscales can assess specific symptoms of psychological distress.

Summary: This study aimed to validate the Anxiety Symptom-scale against two well-being scales and identify cut-off points for the sum score. The results showed high concordance between the Anxiety Symptom-scale and the Cantril Ladder and WHO-5. A sum score of 3-4 on the scale indicated low well-being with a sensitivity of 0.85-0.99. The Anxiety Symptom-scale is considered a sensitive and valid tool for identifying anxiety symptoms in patients with low well-being.
