Summary: This study provides information on opioid use during the escalation of the opioid epidemic in Finland. The study found that the number of opioid users remained stable, but the quantity of opioids per patient increased. The initiation of opioid therapy usually starts with weak opioids and escalation to strong opioids is rare. A significant number of patients were prescribed opioids for chronic non-cancer pain.

Summary: Distal radius fracture is one of the most common fractures in emergency units, requiring significant healthcare resources. A study conducted in Finland found that DRFs are most common among pediatric and elderly women, with a notable difference in incidence between genders. The rate of operative treatment for DRFs appears to have plateaued during the study period.

Summary: The study revealed that immigrants were less likely than Danish-born women to receive timely follow-up after cervical cancer screening, with women from Sub-Saharan Africa showing particularly low probabilities of follow-up. Efforts need to be made to improve follow-up rates in immigrant groups with low attendance.

Summary: This study found that individuals with depression are less likely to have children and have fewer children. The severity and onset age of depression are negatively associated with fertility. Educational level also influences the association, with different effects for men and women across different educational levels.

Summary: This study found that birth order is closely related to the receipt of sickness allowance, especially for mental disorders and musculoskeletal disorders. The results also showed that this association is stronger in women and may be influenced by factors such as education, occupation, income, and family composition, suggesting possible latent mechanisms related to within-family dynamics in childhood.

Summary: Through a study using nationwide registers, it was found that there is no significant association between traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and subsequent multifetal gestations. TBIs do not appear to affect the functions of the entire reproductive system. This study provides baseline information on the effects of TBIs on the risk for multifetal gestations, but further research is necessary.

Summary: According to previous studies, live vaccines like the MMR vaccine may have non-specific effects and reduce infections other than their target infections. This study aimed to evaluate the potential non-specific effects of changing the recommended schedule for the first MMR vaccination in Finland. The results showed that early MMR vaccinated children had fewer infections compared to late MMR vaccinated children, but the differences were also observed in control periods.

Summary: This study found that the coexistence of NAFLD and sarcopenia significantly increased the risk of mortality, especially in the presence of advanced fibrosis in NAFLD. Additionally, the additive effect of NAFLD and sarcopenia on mortality risk suggests the importance of risk stratification for predicting mortality in individuals with metabolic derangements.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between educational level as an indicator of socioeconomic status and the use of mental health services, psychotropic medication, and psychotherapy in Finland. The results showed that low educational level was associated with higher odds of using antidepressants, hypnotics, and sedatives, and lower odds of using mental health services. No associations were found between educational level and use of psychotherapy.

Summary: Limited data is available on the association between neighbourhood deprivation and arterial stiffening. This study found that neighbourhood deprivation in childhood and adulthood predicts arterial stiffness indicated by pulse wave velocity (PWV). These findings suggest that neighbourhood deprivation and low adulthood socioeconomic status are independent risk factors for increased arterial stiffness in adulthood.

Summary: Mental illness is a growing global health problem in Sweden, and the study investigates if Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) can be an effective treatment method for adults with anxiety disorders and depression. A structured literature review based on 24 articles suggests that VRET can work as an effective treatment for anxiety disorders in adults. The initial information given to patients is an essential factor for their acceptance of VRET as a treatment.

Summary: The increasing number of people with dementia globally highlights the urgent need to reduce its scale and impact. Lifetime social participation may play a crucial role in reducing dementia risk and could have implications for individual behavior and public health policy. However, more research is needed to fully understand the causal relationship.
