Lactic acid bacteria were isolated and identified in the faeces of Chinese Crested and Yorkshire terrier pups and their probiotic features were investigated in vitro. Thirty seven isolates were identified as Lactobacillus or Enterococcus. Out of these isolates, 31 were lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and belonged to the species Lactobacillus reuteri (16/37; 43.3%), Lactobacillus animalis (7/37; 18.9%), Lactobacillus acidophilus (3/37; 8.1%), Lactobacillus sanfranciscensis (2/37; 5.4%), Lactobacillus murinus (2/37; 5.4%), and Lactobacillus paraplantarum (1/37; 2.7%), while six other LAB isolates were Enterococcus spp. (6/37; 16.2%). Strains were tested for resistance to gastric acidity (pH 2.5 for 3 h) and bile salts (0.3% ox gall), cell surface hydrophobicity by microbial adhesion to solvents, antagonism against pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes), production of hydrogen peroxide, and antibiotic susceptibility. Thirty four strains were highly resistant to acidic conditions with slight (18 strains) to moderate (16 strains) growth inhibition by bile salts. Seven isolates had highly hydrophobic cellular surfaces and 28 strains exhibited strong antagonism against the bacterial pathogens tested, although 8 isolates tested against Leptospira interrogans had no effect on pathogen growth. All isolates produced low rates of hydrogen peroxide. Based on these results, two Lactobacillus strains showed promising probiotic-related features and merit investigation as probiotics for dogs.

Summary: This study evaluated the probiotic effect of Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum 5(1A) in a murine model of food allergy. The results showed that oral administration of this probiotic prevented weight loss, reduced immune reactions, and improved intestinal permeability. The dose of 10^8 CFU showed the best protective effect, and the use of live bacteria was necessary to achieve these beneficial effects.

Isolation and Identification of Potential Probiotic Bacteria from Human Milk

Quesia S. Damaceno, Bruno Gallotti, Isabela M. M. Reis, Yasmim C. P. Totte, Gabriella B. Assis, Henrique C. Figueiredo, Tales F. Silva, Vasco Azevedo, Jacques R. Nicoli, Flaviano S. Martins

Summary: Breast milk contains beneficial bacteria that can positively influence the health of newborns. The study identified 77 bacteria belonging to four genera, including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Leuconostoc, and Lacticaseibacillus. Two potential probiotics, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus and Leuconostoc mesenteroides, were selected and found to colonize the gastrointestinal tract in germ-free mice and maintain viability after spray-drying.

A Next-Generation Bacteria (Akkermansia muciniphila BAA-835) Presents Probiotic Potential Against Ovalbumin-Induced Food Allergy in Mice

Vivian C. Miranda, Ramon O. Souza, Monica F. Quintanilha, Bruno Gallotti, Helder C. Assis, Ana Maria C. Faria, Jacques R. Nicoli, Denise C. Cara, Flaviano S. Martins

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the probiotic and postbiotic potential of Akkermansia muciniphila BAA-835 in an ovalbumin food allergy model. The results showed that treatment with viable A. muciniphila could alleviate weight loss, decrease serum levels of allergy-related antibodies, reduce intestinal injury and inflammation, and modify the gut microbiota composition. Additionally, the administration of inactivated bacteria also had a postbiotic effect by reducing allergy-related immune responses. These findings suggest that A. muciniphila BAA-835 has both probiotic and postbiotic properties in the prevention and treatment of food allergies.

Human protothecosis: A case report in northeastern Brazil

Daniel Wagner de Castro Lima Santos, Yankee Costa Magalhaes Diniz, Raimunda Ribeiro da Silva, Sirlei Garcia Marques, Maria Rosa Quaresma Bomfim, Conceicao de Maria Pedrozo e Silva de Azevedo

Summary: This article presents a case of extensive human cutaneous protothecosis in northeastern Brazil. The diagnosis was based on histopathological examination and culturing of skin samples, followed by identification using mass spectrometry. Treatment with itraconazole was unsuccessful, but liposomal amphotericin followed by voriconazole led to clinical cure. Protothecosis should be considered as a diagnostic possibility in cases with skin lesions after trauma, especially when the evolution is atypical.

Summary: Hand antisepsis of medical personnel is crucial in patient care as it prevents the spread of pathogenic microorganisms during surgical procedures. This study examined the prevalence of microorganisms on the hands of 131 surgeons before surgery in a university hospital. The results showed a high frequency of microorganisms before handwashing, but after surgical antisepsis, the rate dropped significantly. Gram-positive species, particularly Staphylococcus spp. and Micrococcus luteus, were the most detected, followed by gram-negative species such as Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Acinetobacter baumanii.
