Summary: There is a strong positive linear correlation between free 25(OH)D (f25(OH)D) and total 25(OH)D, making them useful for assessing vitamin D levels. The recommended threshold level for f25(OH)D is 8.499 pg/mL, corresponding to a target concentration of at least 30 ng/mL for t25(OH)D. The upper limit for vitamin D is still unclear, with most experts favoring a upper limit of 100 ng/mL for t25(OH)D.

Summary: This study found a quasi J-shaped relationship between serum circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) level and risk of recurrent stroke in patients with a stroke history. The lowest risk of recurrent stroke was observed at a 25(OH)D level of approximately 60 nmol/L, which was associated with a 48% reduction in risk compared to a level of 10 nmol/L.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the associations between serum markers of biochemical osteomalacia (OM) and dietary intake among Saudi adolescents. The findings showed that Saudi adolescents have insufficient dietary intake of calcium and vitamin D, and low serum vitamin D levels. However, they consume excess inorganic phosphate. Therefore, food fortification to optimize vitamin D and calcium intake should be considered for Saudi adolescents.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of 25(OH)VD3 and VD3 supplementation in the diet of weaned piglets on various aspects of their health, including growth performance, bone quality, intestinal integrity, immune function, and antioxidant capacity. The results showed that 25(OH)VD3 had positive effects on growth performance, bone quality, and antioxidase activity, as well as up-regulated the expression of tight junction proteins and host defense peptides in the ileum. VD3 supplementation increased intestinal sIgA content and the expression of pBD-1, while both VD3 and 25(OH)VD3 altered microbial diversity and increased ileal concentrations of acetate and butyrate. However, the regular dosage of 2000 IU VD3 did not achieve optimal antioxidant capacity and immune function in the weaned piglets. These findings highlight the importance of 25(OH)VD3 supplementation for improved growth performance, intestinal integrity, and antioxidant capacity in piglets.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the intake and sources of vitamin D, as well as the determinants of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (S-25(OH)D) in Finnish adolescents. The results showed that most adolescents had vitamin D intake at the recommended level, although a quarter did not meet the recommended intake and almost a third had low levels of S-25(OH)D. The main determinants of S-25(OH)D were vitamin D intake from supplements, consumption of milk products, consumption of meat products, travels to sunny countries, and average daylight time.

Summary: Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent among young Korean women. This study aimed to determine the optimal vitamin D intake level for maintaining adequate serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels in young Korean women throughout different seasons. The study identified seasonal factors influencing 25(OH)D levels, calculated the necessary vitamin D intake for sufficient levels, and analyzed the relationship between 25(OH)D and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) levels. The results showed that 25(OH)D levels were higher in summertime compared to wintertime, and an increase in vitamin D intake led to a corresponding increase in 25(OH)D levels. The study suggests that increasing UV irradiation time in summertime and consuming vitamin D supplements and foods throughout the year is beneficial for maintaining sufficient levels of 25(OH)D in young Korean women.
