Theranostic agents present a promising clinical approach for cancer detection and treatment. We herein introduce a microbubble and liposome complex (MB-Lipo) developed for ultrasound (US) imaging and activation. The MB-Lipo particles have a hybrid structure consisting of a MB complexed with multiple Lipos. The MB components are used to generate high echo signals in US imaging, while the Lipos serve as a versatile carrier of therapeutic materials. MB-Lipo allows high contrast US imaging of tumor sites. More importantly, the application of high acoustic pressure bursts MBs, which releases therapeutic Lipos and further enhances their intracellular delivery through sonoporation effect. Both imaging and drug release could thus be achieved by a single US modality, enabling in situ treatment guided by real-time imaging. The MB-Lipo system was applied to specifically deliver anti-cancer drug and genes to tumor cells, which showed enhanced therapeutic effect. We also demonstrate the clinical potential of MB-Lipo by imaging and treating tumor in vivo.

Adrenal Nodules Detected at Staging CT in Patients with Resectable Gastric Cancers Have a Low Incidence of Malignancy

Hae Young Kim, Won Chang, Yoon Jin Lee, Ji Hoon Park, Jungheum Cho, Hee Young Na, Hyungwoo Ahn, Sung Il Hwang, Hak Jong Lee, Young Hoon Kim, Kyoung Ho Lee

Summary: This retrospective study aimed to measure the prevalence of adrenal nodules and the proportion of malignant nodules among patients with potentially resectable gastric cancer detected at staging CT. The results showed that the prevalence of adrenal nodules was 4.5% and the proportion of malignant nodules was low. This suggests the need for more accurate screening methods in the evaluation of adrenal nodules to avoid unnecessary additional imaging and examinations.

Diagnostic value of multiparametric MRI in detecting residual or recurrent prostate cancer after high-intensity focused ultrasound

Hyungwoo Ahn, Sung Il Hwang, Taek Min Kim, Hak Jong Lee, Gheeyoung Choe, Sung Kyu Hong, Seok-Soo Byun, Hakmin Lee

Summary: This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of follow-up multiparametric MRI after high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for predicting recurrent prostate cancer and identified other clinical or radiological predictors. The post-HIFU MRIs of 110 patients who underwent follow-up biopsies were analyzed, and the likelihood of recurrence was assessed using a Likert scale. Results showed that high suspicion on post-HIFU MRI and a higher number of cancer-positive cores on initial biopsy were independent predictors of recurrence. Although the sensitivity of post-HIFU MRI was low, its high specificity suggests clinical significance, especially considering the possibility of sampling error in biopsies.

Melanin-like Nanoparticles as an Alternative to Natural Melanin in Retinal Pigment Epithelium Cells and Their Therapeutic Effects against Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Yong-Su Kwon, Min Zheng, Alice Yang Zhang, Zongchao Han

Summary: Melanin is a natural pigment with antioxidant and photoprotective properties. However, its protective effects decline with age, contributing to the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). To enhance the effects of melanin, researchers developed synthetic melanin-like nanoparticles (MNPs) that can replace natural melanin in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). These MNPs have demonstrated biocompatibility, powerful antioxidant properties, and the ability to selectively target reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cellular and mouse models of AMD. The findings suggest the potential efficacy of MNPs as a natural radical scavenger in ROS-related diseases like AMD.
