Summary: Risk analyses within rural regions of Nigeria are not routinely conducted, yet could help inform access to skilled birth care. The objective of this study was to assess and compare the proportion of pregnant women at risk for maternal mortality or morbidity in Benue State, Nigeria by analysing data collected during routine antenatal visits and through the Community Maternal Danger Score (CMDS), a validated risk-analysis tool.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the relationship between maternal PFAS exposure during pregnancy and the risk of postpartum haemorrhage. The results showed that exposure to perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS) increased the risk of postpartum haemorrhage, while exposure to perfluorododecanoic acid (PFDoA) was inversely associated with the risk. Additionally, the concentrations of perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnA) and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) were positively correlated with the amount of postpartum haemorrhage. The risk of postpartum haemorrhage also increased with increasing exposure to a mixture of PFASs.

Summary: This study aimed to identify determinants of postpartum maternal death in Ethiopia at individual and district levels to inform policy-making. The findings revealed that nearly 70% of maternal deaths occurred during the postpartum period, with factors such as previous medical history, awareness of obstetrics complications, medical conditions, and facility readiness influencing the rate of postpartum death.

Summary: According to a recent report by the World Health Organization, Nigeria witnessed 20% of global maternal deaths between 2005 and 2015, primarily due to air pollution. This study aimed to estimate the impact of available pollutants on maternal mortality through data analysis and risk assessment. The findings aligned with existing data on maternal mortality in Nigeria, highlighting the need for environmental regulations to mitigate air pollution and ensure the safety of pregnant women.

Summary: This meta-analysis suggests that the administration of TXA is effective in reducing total blood loss and limiting the occurrence of postpartum hemorrhage in women undergoing cesarean birth or vaginal birth. However, for vaginal birth, the use of TXA may increase the occurrence of nausea and/or vomiting.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between vitamin D serum level and the incidence of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), as well as determine the relative risk of low vitamin D associated with PPH. The results showed that low vitamin D levels were significantly associated with a higher risk of PPH, as well as low hemoglobin levels before delivery. Therefore, antepartum care should consider including vitamin D supplements for all women if possible.

Summary: Data from the Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey show that many pregnant women in rural Nigeria prefer traditional birth attendants (TBAs) over skilled birth attendants (SBAs), contributing to a high maternal mortality rate. Efforts to address factors inhibiting the use of SBAs, such as costs and cultural practices, are crucial for promoting skilled birth attendance and reducing maternal mortality in rural Nigeria.

Summary: Mobilizing citizens in urban governance can enhance participation effectiveness in recycling programs. This study introduces solidarity mobilization as a disincentivized approach, showing that face-to-face guidance, multi-sector monitoring, and involvement of social activists significantly improve citizen participation. Fostering solidarity relations among citizens can effectively drive behavioral change aligned with policy objectives.

Summary: This study investigated the association between negative childbirth experiences and long-term glucocorticoids, and found that a negative objective birth experience was associated with an increased HairF/HairE ratio, which may be a biomarker for identifying women at risk for developing postpartum depression (PPD). Subjective birth experience was not directly related to hair cortisol concentrations, but was a significant predictor for PPD symptoms.

Summary: This paper examines the contribution of pilot implementation studies to the wider spread and sustainability of innovation in healthcare systems. Through an empirical examination of an innovation intermediary organization in the English NHS, the study finds that their work in mobilizing pilot-based evidence involves configuring to context, transitioning evidence, and managing the transition. The findings contribute to theory by showing how intermediary roles can support the effective transitioning of pilot-based evidence, leading to more widespread adoption and sustainability of innovation.
