Summary: A better understanding of r-/K-strategists nitrifiers is crucial for optimizing the design and operation of bioprocesses for wastewater treatment. This study investigated the nitrite oxidation biokinetics, biofilm properties, microbial community, and quorum sensing (QS) in nitrifying biofilms from a continuously flow reactor (CFR) and a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The results revealed different nitrite half saturation constants and dominant nitrite-oxidizing taxa in the CFR and SBR. Additionally, the biofilm properties and AHL signaling substances were significantly different between the two reactors. The insights gained from this study provide valuable information on the molecular mechanisms and adaptation of Nitrospira in different biokinetic environments.

Summary: A better understanding of r-/K-strategists nitrifiers will help to balance the design and operation of bioprocesses for efficient pollution removal from wastewater. The study investigated the biokinetics, biofilm property, microbial community, and quorum sensing (QS) of nitrifying biofilm in a continuously flow reactor (CFR) and a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). Results showed that Nitrospira and Candidatus Nitrospira defluvii were the dominant nitrite-oxidizing taxa in both reactors. The biofilm in SBR had higher ratios of polysaccharide and protein in extracellular polymeric substances and higher thickness compared to CFR. AHLs-based QS might affect the formation of nitrifying biofilm and contribute to the different biokinetics of Nitrospira in CFR and SBR.

Summary: This study investigated the regulatory effect of the external quorum sensing signals, N-dodecanoyl homoserine lactone (C12-HSL), on the CANON process in a membrane bioreactor. C12-HSL enhanced the activity of aerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and improved ammonia monooxygenase activity, while suppressing anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and limiting TN removal. Enzyme synthesis was enhanced, enabling the CANON system to resist high C12-HSL concentrations. C12-HSL was found to be profitable for aerobic ammonia oxidation and could be used to regulate nitrite production.

Summary: This study revealed the crucial role of AHLs in maintaining the stability and activity of Anammox granules at 11-23 degrees C. Exogenous C8-HSL significantly improved granule stability at temperatures of 11-16 degrees C, while C6-HSL and 3OC8-HSL promoted granule activity at temperatures of 11-23 degrees C. This research provides a novel approach to enhance the performance of Anammox granules at low temperatures.

Summary: This review summarizes the contribution of heterocyclic chemistry in the design of AHLs analogues, emphasizing how heterocyclic building blocks can serve as replacements of the lactone moiety, as a bioisostere for the amide group, or as an additional pattern appended to the side chain. Additionally, non-AHL-related heterocyclic compounds with AHL-like QS activity are also mentioned.

Summary: Free-living bacteria in marine environments are believed to be too sparse to use density-dependent quorum sensing systems. However, this study found that marine bacteria do respond to signal molecules, indicating the presence of quorum sensing in marine gels. This discovery is significant for marine and environmental sciences.

Summary: This study presents an approach for developing periphytic biofilm with AHLs stimulation and La loading to achieve efficient and stable phosphorus recovery from wastewater. The combination of AHLs stimulation and La loading achieved 99.0% P entrapment and a method for separate recovery of P and La from biofilms was developed.

Summary: This study investigates the enhancement of caproate production from ethanol and acetate in chain elongation enrichments by utilizing AHLs as signal molecules. The results show that adding C8-HSL significantly increases caproate concentration, possibly due to the increase in protein content and total biomass.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of exogenous N-butanoyl homoserine lactone (C4-HSL), N-hexanoyl homoserine lactone (C6-HSL), and 3-oxo-hexanoyl homoserine lactone (3OC6-HSL) on the dechlorination of ?-hexachlorocyclohexane (?) and methane production. The results showed that exogenous C4-HSL and 3OC6-HSL increased cytochrome c production, enriched dechlorinators and electroactive bacteria, and accelerated dechlorination while inhibiting methane production. On the other hand, C6-HSL facilitated dechlorination and methane production by enhancing biofilm electroactivity and increasing membrane transportation.

Summary: With the increasing resistance of undesirable bacteria to traditional antibiotics, the need to discover alternative treatments is urgent. Quorum sensing is a novel bacterial communication system mediated by signaling molecules called autoinducers. Quorum quenching has been developed as a strategy to inhibit quorum sensing and control resistant bacteria. This review introduces different signaling molecules, elucidates the mechanisms of quorum quenching, and summarizes the applications and advantages of this strategy.

Summary: In this study, it was found that carvacrol, a natural compound found in plants, can effectively inhibit bacterial communication and reduce the toxicity of pathogenic bacteria. Carvacrol was shown to reduce the production of violacein in Chromobacterium violaceum and the concentration of N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) in Aeromonas hydrophila NJ-35. These findings suggest that carvacrol could be a potential strategy for reducing the virulence of pathogenic bacteria.
