Summary: The etiology of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) is drawing increasing attention as its prevalence rises. A study found that dietary supplementation of glucoraphanin (GRP) from cruciferous vegetables can prevent mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress in an acute colitis mouse model induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). GRP supplementation showed positive effects in reducing body weight loss, disease activity index, and colon shortening caused by DSS. It also protected the colonic histological structure and suppressed the release of inflammatory cytokines. Additionally, GRP activated key pathways associated with mitochondrial function and oxidative stress in the mice treated with DSS.

Summary: In this study, the expression profile of Cldn-7 in inflammatory bowel disease and colitis-associated colorectal cancer was analyzed. Knockout of Cldn-7 gene resulted in intestinal abnormalities, increased susceptibility to colitis and colorectal cancer, disrupted epithelial barrier integrity, and promoted inflammatory cascade, leading to malignant transformation. These findings suggest a key role of Cldn-7 in maintaining intestinal homeostasis and preventing inflammatory bowel disease and consequent colorectal cancer.

Summary: The study shows that mannose supplementation can alleviate symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease, including colitis. It improves intestinal barrier integrity, reduces the release of proteins, and prevents mitochondrial dysfunction. Mannose also synergizes with the conventional drug mesalamine in colitis treatment.

Summary: The study found that host-derived L-lactate can promote intestinal epithelial cell (IEC) migration by increasing mitochondrial ATP production in IEC, aiding in promoting intestinal wound healing. Additionally, administering mice with L-lactate can suppress colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Dendrobium fimbriatum polysaccharide (cDFPW1) can improve ulcerative colitis by ameliorating weight loss, disease activity index, colonic pathological damage, protecting intestinal barrier function integrity, and modulating the composition and metabolism of intestinal microbiota. Moreover, cDFPW1 restored the homeostasis of Th17/regulatory T (Treg) cells and regulated Nrf2/NF-kappa B signaling in colitis mice.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a novel astaxanthin nanoparticle using gum arabic (GA) and whey protein powder enriched with milk fat globule membranes (MFGM-WPI) as carriers and investigated its effect and alleviation mechanism on colitis in mice. Results showed that MFGM-GA-astaxanthin effectively improved bioaccessibility of astaxanthin, reduced oxidative stress, alleviated colitis symptoms, repaired intestinal barrier function, and restored abnormalities of gut flora. This study provides a promising therapeutic approach for colon diseases using astaxanthin nanoparticles.

Summary: This study demonstrated that rice protein (RP) purified from rice dregs (RD) can alleviate acute colitis by improving colonic function, regulating inflammatory response, and restoring oxidative balance. Furthermore, RP can activate specific signaling pathways, regulate gut microbiota, and adjust short-chain fatty acid levels to achieve therapeutic effects.

Summary: This study investigated the bioactivity of caesaldekarin e (CA), a cassane diterpenoid isolated from C. bonduc, in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced experimental colitis. The results showed that CA could ameliorate colitis symptoms, suppress inflammation, maintain intestinal barrier integrity, restore gut microbiota imbalance, and regulate tryptophan metabolism. Thus, CA has the potential to be used as a treatment option for ulcerative colitis.

Summary: The phosphorylation of ATF1 at Thr184 (p-ATF1-T184) plays an important role in the metastasis of gastric cancer (GC) by regulating the expression of Matrix metallopeptidase 2 (MMP2). High expression of p-ATF1-T184 is associated with lymph node metastasis and poor survival in GC.

Summary: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common malignant tumor with high incidence and cancer mortality worldwide. Post-translational modifications (PTMs) of proteins have been shown to play important roles in the occurrence and development of cancers, providing novel therapeutic targets and clinical implications. In HCC, glycosylated alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) has been found to have a higher detection rate for early liver cancer than conventional AFP, highlighting the diagnostic value of PTMs.
