The use of ICP-MS to measure metal ion content in biological tissues offers a highly sensitive means to study metal-dependent physiological processes. Here we describe the application of ICP-MS to measure membrane transport of Rb and K ions by the Na, K-ATPase in mouse skeletal muscles and human red blood cells. The ICP-MS method provides greater precision and statistical power than possible with conventional tracer flux methods. The method is widely applicable to studies of other metal ion transporters and metal-dependent processes in a range of cell types and conditions.

Summary: This study assessed the influence of culinary treatments on the total concentration and bioavailability of Cd, Cr, Cu, and Pb in seafood, finding that only Cd (in scallop) was influenced by culinary treatments, while bioavailability percentage was not affected. The analytical method used was deemed adequate for assessing food safety in relation to metal concentration and bioavailability in seafood.

Summary: Fungi maintain the balance of metal micronutrient pools through various homeostasis mechanisms. Metabolites derived from the xan biosynthetic gene cluster in Aspergillus fumigatus bind copper, affect cellular copper content, and exhibit significant metal-dependent antimicrobial properties. These metabolites also demonstrate copper-dependent antimicrobial properties against a variety of human pathogenic fungi and bacteria.

The protective role of selenium against uptake and accumulation of cadmium and lead in white oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus) and pink oyster (Pleurotus djamor) mushrooms

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of Se(IV) and Se(VI) on elemental uptake and accumulation as well as protein distribution in Pleurotus mushrooms. The results showed that supplementation with Se(IV) or Se(VI) decreased Cd accumulation in mushrooms, while Se(VI) increased Pb accumulation. It was suggested that Se(VI) can be used to reduce Cd accumulation and produce Se-enriched mushrooms.

Effects of Se(IV) or Se(VI) enrichment on proteins and protein-bound Se distribution and Se bioaccessibility in oyster mushrooms

Summary: This study investigates the potential of Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus djamor mushrooms to absorb and accumulate selenium in organic substrate. The results show that Pleurotus djamor grown on Se(IV)-supplemented substrate has the greatest potential for selenium uptake and accumulation. Various selenium species, including selenomethionine, selenocystine, and Se-methylselenocysteine, were identified in the mushrooms. In vitro digestion assays showed high bioaccessibility of selenium. The bioaccessible selenium species were found to be mainly associated with low molecular weight proteins in the mushrooms.

Microtubule-associated protein MAP1LC3C regulates lysosomal exocytosis and induces zinc reprogramming in renal cancer cells

Summary: Microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 gamma (MAP1LC3C or LC3C) is a crucial protein involved in autophagosome formation and lysosomal degradation. Its expression is dependent on kidney cancer tumor suppressors and it has shown tumor-suppressing activity. Loss of LC3C leads to peripheral positioning of lysosomes and lysosomal exocytosis, independent of LC3C's autophagic activity. This reprogramming of lysosomal localization and zinc metabolism, accompanied by altered gene expression and amino acid levels, contributes to the tumor-suppressing activity of LC3C.

Summary: This study evaluated three mass oriented rare earth element M2+ correction approaches for use in an ICP-MS environmental method update and assessed their performance using a multi-variant analysis. The results showed that the dual M2+ internal standard and in-sample M2+ correction methods had lower correction errors compared to the fixed factor and M1+ internal standard methods.

Summary: Research has shown that using the glucose analog 2-DG can empower macrophages to eliminate intracellular fungal pathogens. This method of killing is not dependent on altering access to carbon-containing molecules, ATP, ER stress, or autophagy, but rather on reducing the macrophages' intake of exogenous zinc, leading to zinc starvation and subsequent death of the pathogen.
