Summary: This study investigated the lactation status and challenges faced by mothers of preterm infants regarding breastfeeding. The results showed that delayed lactogenesis II was associated with older maternal age and first live birth. Insufficient human milk was the main reason for breastfeeding discontinuation. Interventions to improve early postpartum lactation and breastfeeding techniques may increase breastfeeding adoption.

Summary: This review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions to manage breastfeeding difficulties in mothers or caregivers of infants under six months with growth faltering. The review found limited and low-quality evidence, making it difficult to draw definitive conclusions. More studies targeting infants from one to six months are needed to provide more accurate recommendations.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of maternal iron supplementation on the iron status of exclusively breastfed low-birth-weight infants. The study found that 26.6% of infants developed anemia at 6 months of age, with no difference in the number of anemic infants whether mothers received iron for 3 or 6 months. However, infants whose mothers received iron for 6 months had significantly higher levels of hemoglobin and serum ferritin.

Summary: This study aims to identify unique metabolites that may impact infant health outcomes by analyzing the metabolome of human and bovine milk at 2 weeks of life. The results showed that more than 80% of the milk metabolome is shared between human and bovine milk during early lactation. These findings highlight untargeted metabolomics as a potential strategy to identify unique and shared metabolites in bovine and human milk that may relate to and impact infant health outcomes.

Summary: This article explores the educational resources, methods, and curriculum used in the education of undergraduate health students related to lactation through a scoping review. The findings suggest that best practice standards are used for educational resources, methods, curricular approaches, and foundational topics. However, despite improvement in knowledge and skill, there is still a lack of change in students' confidence. It is important to ensure consistency and improvement in teaching across disciplines.

Summary: The study evaluated neonatal lithium serum concentrations based on three different feeding trajectories - breastfeeding, formula feeding, and mixed feeding. The results showed that the time needed to reach the limit of quantification was longest for exclusive breastfeeding, but no accumulation of lithium was observed during breastfeeding. Overall, breastfeeding was found to be safe and did not lead to adverse effects on development or growth.

Summary: Exclusive human milk feeding was associated with lower gut microbiota diversity in infants, and beta diversity of fecal samples from women and infants was significantly associated with human milk feeding. Maternal gut microbiotas differ by lactation status, potentially confounded by body mass index category. Further research is needed to identify whether lactation directly influences the maternal gut microbiota.

Summary: Researchers are calling for human lactation research to be viewed as a biological framework, studying factors impacting human milk and relationships to infant growth and health. This approach allows for evidence-based interventions to support breastfeeding globally and improve study design for future investigations.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of maternal and infant characteristics, feeding practices, and breastmilk composition on infant behavior following late preterm and early term delivery. The results showed that exclusive breastfeeding was associated with longer sleep duration and shorter crying duration. Certain maternal characteristics (education and annual income) were associated with infant distress behaviors. However, the use of more objective measures in larger samples is recommended to assess factors influencing infant behavior.

Summary: This study aimed to test the hypothesis that relaxation therapy would reduce maternal stress and improve infant growth, behavior, and breastfeeding outcomes after late preterm (LP) and early-term (ET) delivery. The results showed that listening to relaxation meditation significantly reduced maternal stress and improved infant weight standard deviation score. The study suggests that relaxation meditation can be a practical tool in clinical settings to support breastfeeding mothers after LP and ET delivery.

Summary: This study assessed the knowledge and practice of breastfeeding among Saudi women and the impact of lactation counseling on breastfeeding duration and exclusive breastfeeding. The results showed that mothers who received counseling had better knowledge and practices of breastfeeding compared to those who did not. However, the counseling intervention did not show a significant impact on exclusive breastfeeding. Tailored interventions are recommended to improve breastfeeding practices among this population.

Summary: This study examines factors that help pregnant multiparas cope with their fear of birth and highlights the need for improved care and support for these individuals. The findings indicate that obtaining information, planning ahead, receiving empathic support, dealing with emotions in different ways, and focusing on the positive are effective strategies for managing fear of birth. However, the support provided by healthcare providers is insufficient, and there is significant variation in the quality and content of care. It is necessary to critically evaluate the maternity system, policies, and competence of healthcare professionals in order to enhance the care for multiparas with fear of birth.
