The relatively high price of aluminum alkoxides as an alumina source and organic surfactants as morphology control or structure directing agents are less attractive for practical applications to the synthesis of nanostructured alumina. Moreover, some of these synthesis processes may generate large masses of salt by-products. A highly efficient synthesis of nano-alumina from ammonium carbonate aqueous solution and aluminum nitrate ethanol solution without the use of a template and complicated processes has been achieved. The Al(NO3)(3).9H(2)O reagent can be completely converted to nano-alumina without a by-product and the ethanol solutions can be reused. In addition, the CO2 and NH3 produced can also be recycled to the reagent (NH4)(2)CO3. The nano-alumina synthesized is of gamma-alumina structure. Moreover, the simple and environmentally friendly route described could enhance the synthesis technology for nano-alumina and its applications.

Summary: In this study, La-Co-O composites with different La/Co molar ratios were synthesized as catalysts for CO oxidation and CO + NO reduction reactions. The results showed that the properties of the catalysts had a significant impact on the reaction rate, but the co-existence of Co3O4 and LaCoO3 played a crucial role in activating CO and O2 (or NO).

Templating Synthesis of Hierarchically Porous Carbon with Magnesium Salts for Electrocatalytic Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol

Wanyi Gan, Ping Xiao, Junjiang Zhu

Summary: Hierarchically porous carbon was synthesized using templating method with magnesium salts as template precursors and citric acid as carbon precursor. The carbonization process resulted in the formation of MgO particles and released gases which acted as porogens to generate pores in carbon. The resulting hierarchically porous carbon exhibited high surface oxygen functional groups and showed excellent electrocatalytic reduction performance for 4-nitrophenol.

Synthesis of Nitrogen and Phosphorus/Sulfur Co-Doped Carbon Xerogels for the Efficient Electrocatalytic Reduction of p-Nitrophenol

Chaolong Wang, Dengxia Zhu, Huiting Bi, Zheng Zhang, Junjiang Zhu

Summary: In this study, carbon xerogels co-doped with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) or sulfur (S) were synthesized and used as catalysts for the electrocatalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol (p-NP). Nitrogen-doped carbon xerogels (NDCX) were first prepared through the pyrolysis of organic gels, and P or S atoms were then introduced to the NDCX by vapor deposition. Various measurements confirmed the successful doping of N atoms to the carbon xerogels, and the co-doping of P or S atoms affected the existing status of N atoms. Cyclic voltammetry scanning revealed that the N and P co-doped material, P-NDCX-1.0, exhibited the best catalytic performance, with an overpotential of -0.569 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) and a peak slope of 695.90 mu A/V. The material also demonstrated good stability, with only a 14 mV shift in the reduction peak overpotential after 100 cycles.
