Summary: Previous studies have shown an association between nonselective beta-blockers (NSBBs) and a lower risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in cirrhotic patients. This retrospective cohort study utilizing the Cerner Health Facts database in the United States from 2000 to 2017 found that NSBBs, including carvedilol, were significantly associated with a decreased risk of HCC in patients with cirrhosis regardless of complications status. Future randomized-controlled studies should further investigate which NSBB would be the best option to prevent HCC in cirrhosis.

Summary: The VEGF/VEGFR axis plays a crucial role in angiogenesis and tumor vascularization. Current therapies targeting VEGF and its receptors have shown limited effectiveness and undesirable off-target effects. Recent studies have identified VEGF splice variants that modulate angiogenesis, and their expression is regulated by cues within the tumor microenvironment. These variants challenge the established norm of VEGF signaling and their aberrant expression has been observed in several cancers, highlighting the need for further research on their role in cancer and their impact on antiangiogenic therapies.

Summary: 3D object detection typically uses point clouds as input, which are converted into voxels using voxel-based methods. However, the presence of background points in the raw point cloud and the random sampling during voxel partition diminish the performance of the detection system. In this work, we propose a plug-to-play module that includes a shape-aware filter and a semantic-ranked sampler to effectively remove background points and enhance voxel feature expression. Our method achieves faster inference speed and higher detection accuracy compared to state-of-the-art methods, as demonstrated by experiments on the KITTI car detection benchmark.

Summary: Ho3+ and Yb3+ co-doped La7P3O18 up-conversion phosphors were prepared via high-temperature solid-state process. The samples showed a mixture of monoclinic structure La7P3O18 crystals and minor LaPO4 crystals according to XRD analysis. UV-Vis DRS results revealed that La7P3O18 crystal was an indirect semiconductor with an optical band gap of 4.10 eV. Upon excitation at 980 nm, the Ho3+ and Yb3+ co-doped La7P3O18 phosphors exhibited characteristic blue (486 nm), green (550 nm), and red (661 nm) luminescence peaks of Ho3+ ions. The 661 nm peak dominated the up-conversion luminescence spectra. The intensity of up-conversion luminescence initially increased and then decreased with the increase of Ho3+ and Yb3+ doping content. Concentration quenching may occur at Ho3+ and Yb3+ doping contents of 1 at.% and 10 at.%, respectively, through an electric quadrupole-electric quadrupole interaction process. The pumping power dependence of luminescence indicated a two-photon absorption process for the excitation of green and red emissions. The color coordinates of the Ho3+ and Yb3+ co-doped La7P3O18 crystals were located in the orange-red region.

Summary: To overcome the limitations of current piezo-actuated triaxial fast tool servos (FTSs), a novel normal-stressed electromagnetic triaxial FTS with a compact structure and high resonant frequency is proposed. It achieves triaxial motions in the range of hundreds of micrometers and utilizes a single armature for decoupled and noncontact driving forces. The prototype of the triaxial FTS shows excellent agreement with the design target in terms of static and dynamic performances. The system is further enhanced with a linear active disturbance rejection control and an iterative learning scheme for fast and accurate trajectory tracking. By fabricating a hexagonal spherical microlens array, the triaxial FTS demonstrates its capability with a high level of spatial accuracy and good surface quality.

Summary: To address the low efficiency and cutting tool interference issues in machining high aspect ratio surfaces or complex microstructures with existing diamond turning techniques, a novel method is proposed by introducing two additional rotational motions into the traditional ultra-precision machine tool. This allows for arbitrary adjustment of the tool posture during the machining process and enables efficient machining of intricate microstructures, such as monolithic microstructural optics, using the side cutting edge. The mechanical system, machining principle, tool path planning, compensation for tool tip offset, fabrication and inspection of a partially overlapping Fresnel lens array, as well as the analysis of measurement data, are presented to validate the successful fabrication of such complex microstructures with high profile accuracy and surface quality.
