The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of use and types of dietary supplements (DS) used by U.S. adults (19 years) by sociodemographic characteristics: family income-to-poverty ratio (PIR), food security status, and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation using NHANES 2011-2014 data (n = 11,024). DS use was ascertained via a home inventory and a retrospective 30-day questionnaire. Demographic and socioeconomic differences related to DS use were evaluated using a univariate t statistic. Half of U.S. adults (52%) took at least one DS during a 30-day period; multivitamin-mineral (MVM) products were the most commonly used (31%). DS and MVM use was significantly higher among those with a household income of 350% of the poverty level, those who were food secure, and SNAP income-ineligible nonparticipants across all sex, age, and race/ethnic groups. Among women, prevalence of use significantly differed between SNAP participants (39%) and SNAP income-eligible nonparticipants (54%). Older adults (71+ years) remained the highest consumers of DS, specifically among the highest income group (82%), while younger adults (19-30 years), predominantly in the lowest income group (28%), were the lowest consumers. Among U.S. adults, DS use and the types of products consumed varied with income, food security, and SNAP participation.

The Total Nutrient Index is a Useful Measure for Assessing Total Micronutrient Exposures Among US Adults

Alexandra E. Cowan, Regan L. Bailey, Shinyoung Jun, Kevin W. Dodd, Jaime J. Gahche, Heather A. Eicher-Miller, Patricia M. Guenther, Johanna T. Dwyer, Nancy Potischman, Anindya Bhadra, Raymond J. Carroll, Janet A. Tooze

Summary: The Total Nutrient Index (TNI) is a useful construct for assessing total micronutrient exposures of underconsumed micronutrients among US adults. The study found that TNI scores were high on exemplary menus and moderately correlated with the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) 2015. TNI scores differed significantly between different groups and showed higher correlations with biomarker data compared to dietary sources alone.

Summary: This paper reviews the key assumptions, statistical techniques, and considerations underlying the use of short-term dietary intake data to make inference about usual dietary intake. It discusses strategies to mitigate measurement error and estimate characteristics of population-level usual intake, such as group mean intake and percentiles.

Summary: This study examined the use of dietary supplements (DS) in the US population from 2007-2018 using multiple assessment methods. The results showed an increase in the prevalence of DS use as well as micronutrient-containing DS use over time. The use of single-nutrient DS increased, while the use of multivitamin-mineral DS decreased. Different population subgroups showed variations in DS use.

Summary: This study used a data-driven temporal dietary patterning method to evaluate the relationship between energy intake and time cut-offs with BMI and waist circumference. The results showed that different temporal dietary patterns were associated with obesity to varying degrees. This finding provides insights for obesity interventions.

Dietary Costs among Midwestern Adult Food-Pantry Users by Food-Security Status

Agustina Fainguersch, Aaron J. Dewar, Lacey A. McCormack, Heather A. Eicher-Miller

Summary: There is mixed evidence on the relationship between dietary cost, diet quality, and socio-economic status. This study aimed to investigate the association between food-security status and dietary cost by comparing total cost, cost per gram, and cost per calorie of daily dietary intake among food-pantry clients. The findings showed inconsistent relationships and emphasized the importance of considering the metric of food cost and the unit of analysis.

Summary: This study introduces two new benchmark datasets, Food101-LT and VFN-LT, for addressing the class imbalance issue in food classification. A novel two-phase framework is proposed to improve the performance of food classification by undersampling the head classes and oversampling the tail classes. The proposed method achieves the best performance on both datasets and demonstrates its potential for real-life applications.

Summary: This study examines the feasibility of a Healthy School Meals For All (HSMFA) policy in Utah. The findings show that a majority of foodservice directors support the continuation of HSMFA post-pandemic. However, lack of political consensus calls for stepwise implementation and providing cost estimates to increase feasibility.

A Laplace Mixture Representation of the Horseshoe and Some Implications

Ksheera Sagar, Anindya Bhadra

Summary: The horseshoe prior, a state of the art approach to Bayesian sparse signal recovery, is defined as a half Cauchy scale mixture of normal. In this study, we provide a new representation of the horseshoe density as a scale mixture of the Laplace density, explicitly identifying the mixing measure. The complete monotonicity of the horseshoe density and the strong concavity of the corresponding penalty are established, using the Bernstein-Widder theorem and a result due to Bochner. Moreover, the equivalence between local linear approximation and expectation-maximization algorithms for finding the posterior mode under the horseshoe penalized regression is proven, and the resultant estimate is shown to be sparse.
