Reduction of population sodium intake has been identified as a key initiative for reduction of Non-Communicable Disease. Monitoring of population sodium intake must accompany public health initiatives aimed at sodium reduction. A number of different methods for estimating dietary sodium intake are currently in use. Dietary assessment is time consuming and often under-estimates intake due to under-reporting and difficulties quantifying sodium concentration in recipes, and discretionary salt. Twenty-four hour urinary collection (widely considered to be the most accurate method) is also burdensome and is limited by under-collection and lack of suitable methodology to accurately identify incomplete samples. Spot urine sampling has recently been identified as a convenient and affordable alternative, but remains highly controversial as a means of monitoring population intake. Studies suggest that while spot urinary sodium is a poor predictor of 24-h excretion in individuals, it may provide population estimates adequate for monitoring. Further research is needed into the accuracy and suitability of spot urine collection in different populations as a means of monitoring sodium intake.

Summary: This study examines the policy documents on healthy behaviors in National Sporting Organizations (NSOs) in New Zealand, and finds that many NSOs lack adequate health-related policies, which may be due to a lack of resources, other priorities, or simply not considering policy development in these areas.

Gender roles, generational changes and environmental challenges: an intersectional interpretation of perceptions on healthy diets among iTaukei women and men in Fiji

Summary: This study investigated the perceptions of iTaukei Fijian women and men on diet and the ability to consume a healthy diet through focus group discussions. The findings revealed that generational changes, strong gendered beliefs, cultural and religious obligations, and environmental changes were important influences on diet. The study concluded that traditional perceptions of gender roles were misaligned with societal and environmental changes, and an intersectional approach is crucial in informing equitable food policy.

Effectiveness of a Sodium-Reduction Smartphone App and Reduced-Sodium Salt to Lower Sodium Intake in Adults With Hypertension: Findings From the Salt Alternatives Randomized Controlled Trial

Helen Eyles, Jacqueline Grey, Yannan Jiang, Elaine Umali, Rachael McLean, Lisa Te Morenga, Bruce Neal, Anthony Rodgers, Robert N. Doughty, Cliona Ni Mhurchu

Summary: The study aimed to determine whether a 12-week intervention with a sodium-reduction package comprising the SaltSwitch smartphone app and reduced-sodium salts could reduce urinary sodium excretion in adults with high blood pressure. However, the study found no evidence that dietary sodium intake was reduced in adults with high blood pressure. This may be due to lower engagement with the trial intervention package by participants.

The quantification of sodium intake from discretionary salt intake in New Zealand using the lithium-tagged salt method

Nan Xin Wang, Rachael M. McLean, Claire Cameron, Sheila A. Skeaff

Summary: The aim of this study was to estimate the proportion of total sodium that comes from discretionary salt intake in healthy adults aged 18-40 years. The results showed that 13% of total sodium intake derived from discretionary salt in this sample. Therefore, it is recommended to implement strategies to reduce sodium intake from both discretionary and non-discretionary sources of salt, taking into account the contribution of iodine from discretionary salt intake.

Summary: This study aims to examine the trajectories of BMI in Indonesian adults from 1993 to 2014, investigating different patterns by sex and birth cohort. The findings indicate that the mean BMI among Indonesian adults has increased between 1993 and 2014, with the most recent birth cohorts showing the fastest increase. This highlights the urgent need for targeted overweight and obesity prevention and intervention programs in Indonesia.

Nutrition support in oncology care in Aotearoa New Zealand: current practice, and where to from here?

Rana Peniamina, Rachael McLean

Summary: This research aimed to understand the availability of nutrition-related information and support for individuals undergoing cancer treatment. The study found that most healthcare practitioners and support workers considered nutrition to be moderately important for cancer recovery, patient wellbeing, and preventing cancer recurrence. However, they also noted that nutrition information and support were not widely available through oncology practices and cancer support services. The main barriers identified were insufficient funding, lack of time and staff capacity, and limited access to evidence-based information and dietary expertise.

Summary: This study calls for journal editors to rigorously challenge unfounded claims about sodium intake by independent reviewers before publication; to avoid editorial writers who have been co-authors with the subject paper's authors; to require conflict of interest statements; and to ensure that their pages are used only by those seeking to advance knowledge through the scientific method. The public interest in disease prevention and treatment demands nothing less.
