Gastrointestinal (GI) problems are a common concern of athletes during intense exercise. Ultimately, these symptoms can impair performance and possibly prevent athletes from winning or even finishing a race. The main causes of GI problems during exercise are mechanical, ischemic and nutritional factors. Among the nutritional factors, a high intake of carbohydrate and hyperosmolar solutions increases GI problems. A number of nutritional manipulations have been proposed to minimize gastrointestinal symptoms, including the use of multiple transportable carbohydrates. This type of CHO intake increases the oxidation rates and can prevent the accumulation of carbohydrate in the intestine. Glucose (6%) or glucose plus fructose (8%-10%) beverages are recommended in order to increase CHO intake while avoiding the gastric emptying delay. Training the gut with high intake of CHO may increase absorption capacity and probably prevent GI distress. CHO mouth rinse may be a good strategy to enhance performance without using GI tract in exercises lasting less than an hour. Future strategies should be investigated comparing different CHO types, doses, and concentration in exercises with the same characteristics.

Sex and population-specific cutoff values of muscle quality index: Results from NHANES 2011-2014

Lorena Cristina Curado Lopes, Larissa Vaz-Goncalves, Raquel Machado Schincaglia, Maria Cristina Gonzalez, Carla M. Prado, Erick P. de Oliveira, Joao Felipe Mota

Summary: This study aimed to develop sex and population-specific normative data and cutoff values for the muscle quality index (MQI). Analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2014 revealed differences in MQI values by sex and population studied. Men generally had lower MQI values compared to women, and non-Hispanic Asians had higher MQI values while non-Hispanic Blacks had lower values.

Plasma omega-3 is not associated with appendicular muscle mass index in young and middle-aged individuals: Results from NHANES 2011-2012

Flavia M. S. de Branco, Luana T. Rossato, Ana Elisa M. Rinaldi, Catarina M. Azeredo, Erick P. de Oliveira

Summary: This study evaluated the association between plasma omega-3 (to-3) and appendicular muscle mass index (AMMI) in young and middle-aged individuals. The results showed that total plasma to-3, DHA, EPA, and ALA were not associated with AMMI in both men and women. Additionally, there was no association found between plasma to-3 and AMMI in separate analyses of young and middle-aged individuals.

Heitor O. Santos, Larissa S. Limirio, Aline S. dos Reis, Rafaela Nehme, Joao Pedro Floriano, Gederson K. Gomes, Gustavo D. Pimentel, Erick P. de Oliveira

Summary: This study investigated the association between neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) with strength, muscle mass, and functional capacity in kidney transplant patients (KTPs). The results showed that NLR and CRP levels were not associated with these muscle-related parameters in KTPs.

Redox Status of Postmenopausal Women with Single or Multiple Cardiometabolic Diseases Has a Similar Response to Mat Pilates Training

Summary: Postmenopausal women often have cardiometabolic diseases and higher oxidative stress. Exercise, such as Mat Pilates, can be beneficial, but its physiological effects need further investigation. This study aimed to explore the impact of 12 weeks of Mat Pilates on redox status in postmenopausal women with cardiometabolic diseases. The results showed no significant changes in redox markers between the groups, except for greater reductions in total antioxidant capacity in the SINGLE group.

Vascular stiffness and healthy arterial aging in older patients with optimal blood pressure

Alessandra Ferreira Mendes Jiticovski, Denis Fabiano Souza, Ercilhana Goncalves Batista Freitas, Cleria Rodrigues Ferreira, Cristiane de Sousa Pereira, Romario Divino Vilarinho Galvao, Walkiria de Almeida Martins Santos, Erick P. de Oliveira, Sebastiao Rodrigues Ferreira Filho

Summary: This study utilizes pulse wave velocity to diagnose arterial stiffness and systemic blood pressure levels. The carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity and central and peripheral pressures were evaluated in all patients, revealing that 56.7% of the sample had pulse wave velocity higher than 7.6 m/s. Elderly individuals with normal blood pressure may still have a risk of arterial stiffness.

Safety of beta-alanine supplementation in humans: a narrative review

Erick P. de Oliveira, Guilherme G. Artioli, Roberto Carlos Burini

Summary: Carnosine levels play a significant role in buffering intracellular pH during exercise, with beta-alanine availability being the limiting factor for muscle carnosine synthesis. Meta-analysis results show that beta-alanine supplementation has a positive effect on high-intensity exercise performance. Adverse effects of beta-alanine usage are minimal, with only paresthesia reported at high doses, which can be mitigated by splitting doses or using sustained-release formulas. Longer supplementation periods and safety evaluations in representative populations are still needed.

Association between serum uric acid and muscle strength in older adults with or without gout diagnosis: NHANES 2011-2014

Rafaela Nehme, Paula C. Nahas, Erick P. de Oliveira

Summary: Increased oxidative stress is a cause of muscle strength loss during aging. Uric acid (UA) is an important antioxidant that is positively associated with muscle strength in older adults. However, the association between UA and muscle strength in individuals with gout is unclear.
