Summary: Changing diets toward more plant-based on a large scale could greatly reduce humanity's impact on the environment. However, behavior change, especially regarding ingrained and socially dependent behaviors like food choice, tends to be slow. The concept of societal tipping points offers a potential for rapid changes. This review explores theories and recent research insights to suggest that both short-term and long-term actions are needed to facilitate the shift towards more plant-based diets.

Summary: This paper aims to identify and structure an empirical evidence base of the climate change, food insecurity and societal collapse pathway. By developing an original methodology and utilizing a novel-format causal loop diagram, the paper explores how climate change may lead to disruptions in agricultural systems and food supply, ultimately causing economic shocks, socio-political instability, starvation, migration, and conflict. Suggestions for future research are also provided to further enhance our understanding of the causal pathways between climate change and societal collapse.

Summary: Algae, a group of organisms that can perform photosynthesis and are found ubiquitously, have been extensively studied for their potential in addressing environmental crises. They are effective in biomonitoring water pollution, bioremediation, and the production of eco-friendly energy sources. Industries like food and pharmaceuticals are utilizing algae for the production of value-added products. Additionally, algae have significant benefits in agriculture and climate change mitigation. The ease and cost-effectiveness of sampling and culturing algae have contributed to their popularity. This review paper discusses the sustainable applications of algae in pollution control, energy production, agriculture, and fighting climate change, highlighting recent trends and advancements in algal technologies and indicating future prospects.

Summary: This study utilizes a semantically open framework (MuSIASEM) to investigate nexus challenges in agricultural production systems in transboundary river basins, with the Iranian Aras River Basin as a case study. The study finds that utilizing different interrelated logics of aggregation can help identify and assess trade-offs in policy deliberations. Additionally, the study emphasizes the importance of a co-production of analysis with social actors and access to more complete data for effective nexus governance in the region.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between the start of the rainy season (SOS) and grain market price movements in five African countries, finding that SOS indicators can increase the predictive power of price forecasting over a 6-month period. However, the performance of SOS indicators vary considerably by country, with the strongest results seen in central Ethiopia, southern Kenya, and southern Somalia.

Summary: Sustainable food production and consumption, especially through innovations like controlled environment agriculture and aeroponic systems, are crucial for reducing environmental impacts and improving food security. This study evaluates the environmental impacts of an aeroponic farm container system in the UK, finding that energy requirements drive all impacts and renewable powered systems significantly reduce climate change impacts. The findings suggest that aeroponic systems can offer lower impact food compared to imports and enhance food security.

Summary: Food-energy-water systems are vulnerable to natural hazards and climate change risks. Adaptations to these vulnerabilities are occurring globally, with a focus on food security. There are interconnected relationships between different variables characterizing these adaptations. However, there is a need to consider interconnectivity and adopt a nexus approach in future adaptations.

Summary: Nutrition, food security and livelihoods in Nepal are being negatively impacted by climate change, exacerbating existing issues of malnutrition, hunger and rural poverty. This study explores six underutilized food crops in four mountainous districts of Karnali province to determine their potential for improving nutrition and food security. The findings indicate that these underutilized crops play a vital role in the diets and livelihoods of the people in Karnali, highlighting their significance in addressing nutrition and food insecurity in regions with inadequate food supply and marginal lands. Promoting the cultivation and consumption of these crops can create a more sustainable and diverse food system that is resilient to climate change, though further investigation is needed.
