Clinical Course of Pain and Function Following Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Systematic Review and Meta-Regression

Said Mohamad Sayah, Sascha Karunaratne, Paula R. Beckenkamp, Mark Horsley, Mark J. Hancock, David J. Hunter, Robert D. Herbert, Tarcisio F. de Campos, Daniel Steffens

Summary: This study conducted a comprehensive investigation on over 59,000 patients undergoing TKA, finding that the recovery of pain and function in the first year postoperatively is large and rapid but incomplete. However, at 10 years postoperatively, the gains in pain scores may still remain while there is an improvement in function.

Development and external validation of a prediction model for patient-relevant outcomes in patients with chronic widespread pain and fibromyalgia

Summary: This study developed prediction models and externally validated them in patients with chronic widespread pain and fibromyalgia. The complexity of the models may reduce their clinical utility, while simple models were nearly as accurate and more practical.

Effect of diagnostic labelling on management intentions for non-specific low back pain: A randomized scenario-based experiment

Mary O'Keeffe, Giovanni E. Ferreira, Ian A. Harris, Ben Darlow, Rachelle Buchbinder, Adrian C. Traeger, Joshua R. Zadro, Rob D. Herbert, Rae Thomas, Joletta Belton, Chris G. Maher

Summary: This study found that labeling low back pain with different diagnostic labels can influence people's beliefs about imaging, surgery, second opinion, seriousness, recovery, work, and physical activities. Labeling low back pain as "episode of back pain", "lumbar sprain", and "non-specific LBP" can reduce the perceived need for imaging, surgery, and second opinion, as well as decrease the perceived seriousness of low back pain and enhance recovery expectations.
