There is a need for a robust and accurate technique to measure ammonia (NH3) emissions from animal feeding operations (AFOs) to obtain emission inventories and to develop abatement strategies. Two consecutive seasonal studies were conducted to measure NH3 emissions from an open-lot dairy in central Texas in July and December of 2005. Data including NH3 concentrations were collected and NH3 emission fluxes (EFIs), emission rates (ERs), and emission factors (EFs) were calculated for the open-lot dairy. A protocol using flux chambers (FCs) was used to determine these NH3 emissions from the open-lot dairy. NH3 concentration measurements were made using chemiluminescence-based analyzers. The ground-level area sources (GLAS) including open lots (cows on earthen corrals), separated solids, primary and secondary lagoons, and milking parlors were sampled to estimate NH3 emissions. The seasonal NH3 EFs were 11.6 +/- 7.1 kg-NH3 yr(-1)head(-1) for the summer and 6.2 +/- 3.7 kg-NH3 yr(-1)head(-1) for the winter season. The estimated annual NH3 EF was 9.4 +/- 5.7 kg-NH3 yr(-1)head(-1) for this open-lot dairy. The estimated NH3 EF for winter was nearly 47% lower than summer EF. Primary and secondary lagoons (similar to 37) and open-lot corrals (similar to 63%) in summer, and open-lot corrals (similar to 95%) in winter were the highest contributors to NH3 emissions for the open-lot dairy. These EF estimates using the FC protocol and real-time analyzer were lower than many previously reported EFs estimated based on nitrogen mass balance and nitrogen content in manure. The difference between the overall emissions from each season was due to ambient temperature variations and loading rates of manure on GLAS. There was spatial variation of NH3 emission from the open-lot earthen corrals due to variable animal density within feeding and shaded and dry divisions of the open lot. This spatial variability was attributed to dispirit manure loading within these areas.

Effect of different temperatures on the properties of pyrolysis products of Parthenium hysterophorus

Qurat-ul-Ain, Muhammad Shafiq, Sergio C. Capareda, Firdaus-e-Bareen

Summary: The research focused on pyrolysis of Parthenium hysterophorus at different temperatures and found that temperature significantly influenced the yield and properties of pyrolysis products, with biochar stability increasing at higher temperatures. Additionally, chemical composition was richer at lower pyrolysis temperatures. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry analysis showed the presence of various compounds in biochar and bio-oil, with different trends observed with increasing temperature.

Summary: This study optimized pyrolysis conditions for maximum energy recovery from Beauty Leaf Tree oil seed press cake. Controlled pyrolysis produced different proportions of biochar, bio-oil, and syngas coproducts, with biochar having the highest mass yield and energy content. Energy from biochar was optimized at a pyrolysis temperature of 425 degrees C and 75 min of exposure time, indicating that almost all energy from the feedstock can be recovered via pyrolysis.

Summary: The study found that converting cotton gin trash into biochar, compost, and co-compost can improve soil properties and have positive effects on plant growth. The application of co-composted biochar at 10 t ha(-1) showed significant benefits for plant growth, while lower rates of 2.5 t ha(-1) and 5 t ha(-1) also contributed to plant growth.

Summary: The valorisation of forestry residues as renewable resources for energy and bioproduct production is gaining interest, but a holistic technical and environmental analysis is lacking. This study evaluated bio-oil, synthesis gas, and biochar production from spruce, pine, and larch residues under different pyrolysis conditions. The results showed that larch bio-oil production at 300°C had superior performance. The study also highlighted the energy-intensive nature of the pyrolysis process, but suggested that on-site syngas energy and biochar could offset energy requirements.

Airflow Resistance of Solid-Separated Dairy Waste for Drying and Storage

El Jirie N. Baticados, Sergio C. Capareda, Cole I. Mitchell

Summary: The resistance of solid-separated solid wastes (SSDWs) to moderate airflow was measured at different bed depths and moisture levels. The pressure drop across a loose-fill fixed bed column increased more rapidly with increasing airflow rates and less rapidly with increasing bed depths. A higher moisture content resulted in a decrease in the pressure drop. A nonlinear model accurately described the airflow resistance data of SSDWs at different moisture contents. Empirical curves were developed to aid in the design of ventilation systems for drying and storage.
