Summary: The scarcity of fossil fuel and increasing environmental concerns have led to a growing need for the development of environmentally friendly and sustainable energy resources. Biodiesel, produced through transesterification of oils or fats with short-chain alcohol, is considered an optimal replacement for fossil-fuel based diesel due to its reproducible and eco-friendly properties. Among various catalysts, ionic liquids have shown potential as viable substitutes for conventional catalysts in biodiesel production. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the classification, synthetic schemes, and catalytic mechanism of basic ionic liquids, which have been less explored compared to acidic ionic liquids. The utilization of basic ionic liquids as catalysts for biodiesel preparation, along with the current challenges and prospects for future use, is also discussed.

Summary: Ionic liquids and poly(ionic liquid)s are promising materials for CO2 capture, but their industrial application has been delayed due to economic and technical issues. This study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of imidazolium and pyrrolidinium-derived ILs and PILs with basic anions, and evaluates their CO2 sorption capacity. The results show great potential for CO2 capture and recycling.

Summary: A synergistic system for enantioseparation in capillary electrophoresis (CE) with a chiral ionic liquid (CIL) based on D-10-camphorsulfonic acid as an additive and carboxymethyl-beta-cyclodextrin (CM-beta-CD) as the chiral selector is presented in this work. The proposed method showed excellent enantioseparation performance towards sixteen chiral drugs, with notably improved resolution (Rs) and selectivity factor (alpha) compared to the single CM-beta-CD system. Several key parameters were investigated, and Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) was used to prove the potential synergistic effect. The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) results further demonstrated the function of the CIL and the superiority of the synergistic system. Chiral impurity determination of chlorpheniramine maleate sample was successfully carried out using the established method.

Summary: The study focused on using acidic and basic ionic liquids to modify gamma-Al2O3 particles for improving the performance and mechanical strength of composite membranes. The acidic IL showed better dispersion effect on particles and enhanced CO2 permeability and CO2/N-2 selectivity in the membranes. Molecular simulations confirmed the experimental results and showed that ILs had different effects on diffusivity and solubility coefficients of CO2 molecules in the membranes.

Summary: A new class of functionalized imidazolium-based Task-Specific Ionic Liquids (TSILs) is designed as low-cost bifunctional organocatalyst. New alkoxymethylimidazolium ILs are efficiently synthesized under solvent free conditions and extensively characterized by physical and spectral studies. The newly synthesized ILs demonstrate excellent catalytic potential in condensation reactions of high importance, such as the Biginelli reaction for the synthesis of medicinally important dihydropyrimidiones. The effect of the alkoxy group and counter-ions in the imidazolium salts were evaluated in detail. Moreover, computational studies were employed to explore the structural dynamics and physicochemical properties of the prepared ionic liquids. 3-(iso-butoxymethyl)-1-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium tetrafluoroborate (iBOMMIMBF4 7) exhibited the highest catalytic ability due to the combined influence of the alkoxy group structure, counterion nature, high electrophilicity index, and availability of the reactive C2-H. Some notable advantages of the new TSILs include efficient catalyst preparation, simple work-up procedure, recyclability, short reaction times, and excellent yields.

Summary: Solid state nanopores are single-molecular devices governed by nanoscale physics with a broad potential for technological applications, but the control of translocation speed in these systems is still limited. Ionic liquids are molten salts commonly used as alternate solvents to regulate the chemical and physical interactions on solid-liquid interfaces.

Summary: With the increasing emissions of NF3 during the expansion of the electronic industry, finding a way to capture NF3 has become urgent. This study made a pioneering attempt to capture NF3 in Lewis acidic ionic liquids (LAILs), and found that [Omim][Fe2Cl7] LAILs exhibited high NF3 solubility under specific conditions, providing a novel insight into NF3 capture.

Summary: A novel and eco-friendly method for direct graphite exfoliation using 1-allyl-pyridinium-based ionic liquids and high-power microwave irradiation was developed. The exfoliated graphene showed improved adsorption on the graphite surface due to the combination of cations and anions in the ILs. The resulting solid acid catalysts exhibited high catalytic activity for the saccharification of cellulose, surpassing several commercial catalysts.
