Summary: In this study, solid heterogeneous silica supported lanthanum trifluoroacetate and trichloroacetate were developed as green Lewis acid catalysts. These catalysts were synthesized using a novel, simple, cheap, clean, and environmentally friendly method. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were well studied and characterized using sophisticated spectroscopic techniques. The catalyst demonstrated high efficiency in the synthesis of arylimidazole derivatives under solvent-free conditions, with higher yields, mild reaction conditions, and short reaction times. It can be easily recovered and reused in both water and various organic solvents.

Summary: An efficient, metal-free, catalyst-free and solvent-free method for the reductive amination of levulinic acid with different anilines has been developed using HBpin as the reducing reagent. This method provides an excellent approach to synthesize different N-substituted pyrrolidones without the need for solvents or added catalysts under metal-free conditions. It is also the first report on the synthesis of different pyrrolidones using solvent-free and catalyst-free methods. The proposed mechanism for pyrrolidone formation has been supported by DFT calculations and control experiments.

Summary: In this work, a facile method for the fabrication of high-efficiency N-doped carbon catalyst for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol was reported. The catalyst showed excellent performance with the introduction of N atoms, which enhanced electron transfer and promoted the adsorption of 4-NP ions, leading to high catalytic activity. This study not only provides a versatile strategy for preparing advanced N-doped carbon materials, but also offers useful guidance for designing and developing biomass-derived metal-free catalysts for various catalytic reactions.

Summary: Depolymerization of condensation polymers often requires solvents and homogeneous catalysts, but suffer from poor interfacial contact with solid plastics. This study discovers a spontaneous heterogeneous catalyst layer on the surface of polyethylene terephthalate during the homogeneous catalytic depolymerization process, and demonstrates that the construction of solid-plastic interfaces enables solvent-free depolymerization at relatively low temperatures. The introduction of trace amounts of zinc by electrostatic adsorption is sufficient for catalyzing the depolymerization. The concept of plastic-catalyst contact mass interfacial catalysis could inspire new approaches to address plastic waste problems.
