Summary: Stroke is the second leading cause of death globally, and its incidence is expected to rise by 2030. In Pakistan, the estimated incidence of stroke is about 250 per 100,000 individuals. Walking difficulties are present in approximately 80% of stroke survivors, and a quarter of them still require assistance for gait impairments even after rehabilitation. Falls are common among stroke patients, with the majority occurring during activities like turning. Gait rehabilitation is crucial for functional independence and community ambulation, and the use of technology in neurological and gait rehabilitation post stroke is still a novel advancement.

Summary: The elderly population is growing rapidly worldwide and requires significant healthcare services due to age-related physiological deterioration. Aging leads to poor postural control and impaired balance, resulting in increased falls, decreased quality of life, and higher disability and mortality rates. In Pakistan, there is a lack of awareness and resources for fall prevention and screening programs for the elderly. Regular fall risk screening, integration of fall prevention programs, and balance rehabilitation in elderly healthcare services can effectively reduce the incidence of falls among the elderly population in Pakistan. In addition, the use of latest technology in balance rehabilitation should also be considered. This review aims to highlight appropriate strategies for fall risk screening and balance rehabilitation as an important healthcare intervention for the elderly in Pakistan.

Summary: This study aimed to develop an objective method for quantifying pain in the low back region using pressure pain threshold (PPT) and demographic factors as predictive variables. Two phases of research were conducted, and it was found that higher PPT scores, increased lean body mass, lean physique, and longer duration of chronic low back pain (CLBP) were associated with a reduction in pain intensity, affect, and disability. Advancing age was associated with an increase in these outcomes. The diagnostic accuracy of predicting pain intensity, affect, and disability was 63%-65% in phase I and increased to 65%-78% in phase II.

Summary: Dysphagia, difficulty in swallowing, can be caused by various factors such as stroke and head injury, and is associated with neuro-muscular impairments in different age groups. VitalStim (R) therapy, a relatively new approach, uses neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) to improve swallowing function. This review summarizes the effectiveness of VitalStim (R) in dysphagia and discusses the barriers to its use in Pakistan.

Summary: World Health Organization data shows a significant increase in global obesity, with about 30% of the world's population classified as overweight or obese. Unhealthy dietary habits, lack of physical activity, urbanization, and sedentary lifestyle due to technology are contributing factors. Cardiac rehabilitation, which has evolved from an exercise-only program to a multidisciplinary individualized intervention plan, is effective for risk factor modification and prevention of cardiometabolic diseases. High-intensity interval training shows promise for the management of visceral adiposity and generalized obesity. More research is needed due to underutilization and lack of local data.

Summary: Soccer (football) is a popular weight-bearing sport worldwide with high incidence of injuries, especially among young amateur players. Modifiable risk factors like neuromuscular control, postural stability, hamstring strength, and core dysfunction play a significant role. The FIFA 11+ injury prevention program focuses on training neuromuscular control, posture, balance, agility, and body control. However, in Pakistan, this training protocol is not utilized due to lack of resources and knowledge. This review emphasizes the importance of including FIFA 11+ in the curriculum and providing faculty training.

Summary: Low back pain is a common disorder that affects the lumbar spine and has a global prevalence of 15-30%. Postural control, which relies on sensory information from multiple systems, can be affected by low back pain. Biofeedback can be used to down-train elevated muscle activity and up-train weak or inhibited muscles. It can also help educate patients about physiological processes and the interaction of biopsychosocial factors in causing pain.
