Summary: The dysregulation of uric acid homeostasis is detrimental to cardiovascular and kidney health. This study established a rat model with the genetic ablation of the Xdh gene and found that the absence of Xdh leads to the accumulation of uric acid metabolites in the kidney, resulting in severe kidney injury and functional decline.

Summary: Apabetalone can inhibit the progression of chronic kidney disease by suppressing the activation of renal mesangial cells and reducing the expression of genes associated with fibrosis, inflammation, and calcification. This drug also reduces the risk of major adverse cardiac events in CKD patients.

Summary: Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute systemic vasculitis that primarily affects children and is the most common cause of acquired heart disease. The etiology of KD is unknown, but differential methylation and gene expression analysis have identified genes involved in the disease mechanisms. Researchers have developed a database called KDmarkers to provide access to these potential KD biomarkers.

Summary: miR-204 is a high-value microRNA that plays a critical role in regulating cardiovascular and renal physiology, exhibiting tissue-specific expression patterns and being influenced by multiple regulatory mechanisms. It attenuates pulmonary arterial hypertension and renal injury while promoting hypertension and endothelial dysfunction, potentially impacting disease processes through targeting various biological pathways. Dysregulation of miR-204 in cardiovascular and renal diseases highlights its unequivocal functional roles and clinical relevance.

Summary: Spatial omics is an approach that integrates spatial knowledge with transcript or protein expression information to explore tissue microenvironment and cellular networks. However, there is a lack of databases for users to access and analyze spatial omics data. To address this limitation, Aquila, a comprehensive platform for managing and analyzing spatial omics data, has been developed. Aquila contains 107 datasets from 30 diseases, covering studies using different technologies.

Summary: In this study, it was found that ATP1A1 may be a key susceptibility gene involved in calcium stone formation. The down-regulation of ATP1A1 was associated with crystal deposition and activation of related signaling pathways. Overexpression of ATP1A1 or treatment with a specific inhibitor alleviated oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, crystal-cell adhesion, and stone formation. These findings suggest that ATP1A1 could be a potential therapeutic target for treating calcium stones.

Summary: Researchers have developed a comprehensive database called scQTLbase for searching, analyzing, and visualizing single-cell expression quantitative trait loci (sc-eQTLs). The database includes 304 datasets spanning 57 cell types and 95 cell states. It offers various functionalities such as gene expression visualization, a genome browser, and colocalization visualization based on GWAS datasets.

Summary: This study utilized the OmniSeq transcriptome-based platform to develop biomarkers of response to immunotherapy. A 5-gene panel was identified that was associated with improved objective response rate (ORR) in patients treated with nivolumab monotherapy for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). However, this gene panel was not predictive for treatment response in patients receiving ipilimumab and nivolumab combination therapy.

Summary: In this study, the survival outcomes of octogenarian and younger renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients were compared after surgery. The results showed that the octogenarian group had comparable survival outcomes as the younger group after propensity score matching analysis. Therefore, active treatment can be considered in octogenarian patients with good performance status.

Summary: The study found that biomarkers previously associated with immune checkpoint inhibitor-containing regimens were not predictive for survival in RCC patients treated with nivolumab plus ipilimumab. However, gene expression analysis revealed an association between an inflammatory response and progression-free survival in patients receiving this treatment.

Summary: Kidneys play a unique role in copper redistribution in the body, controlling copper uptake and release through copper transporters. The study showed changes in the expression and localization of CTR1 protein in the kidneys of copper-overloaded mosaic mutant mice, preventing copper transport and protecting cells from copper toxicity.

Summary: Rituximab (RTX) may be an effective and relatively safe alternative for the treatment of adult frequent-relapsing or steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome patients. Patients with minimal change disease have a higher complete remission rate with RTX, while those with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis have a lower remission rate and further investigation is needed on long-term adverse events.
