Summary: This study examined the growth outcomes of late preterm infants and identified factors associated with failure to recover growth. The results showed that 34% of children did not regain weight at 36 months. Infants who did not regain weight at 12 months were at a higher risk of not regaining weight at 36 months. The same risk factor was also associated with length catch-up growth. Additionally, infants fed any human milk at discharge were protected from failure to achieve weight and length catch-up growth at 36 months.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and the risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children. It found that children born to mothers with HDP had higher rates of preterm-birth and small-for-gestational-age, both of which are risk factors for ASD. The study also suggested that HDP may not be a major contributor to ASD, but rather preterm-birth and SGA play a moderating role in increasing ASD risks.

Summary: This study examined the growth and body composition of SGA and AGA VLBW infants, as well as their outpatient neurodevelopmental outcomes. The results showed significant differences in percentage of body fat, percentage of lean mass, and weight gain between SGA and AGA groups at the first ADP assessment. However, there was no difference in outpatient neurodevelopmental testing between the two groups. The study found that weight gain as catch-up body fat accrual is associated with normal neurodevelopment in SGA preterm infants compared to AGA preterm infants.

Participants who underwent a palliative procedure had worse neurodevelopmental outcomes and longer cardiac intensive care unit stays.

Summary: Dosing guidance for children with obesity is often unknown and it remains unclear whether children with and without obesity experience equivalent enoxaparin exposure. A physiologically-based pharmacokinetic model was developed to explore the differences in anti-Xa concentration between children with and without obesity. The model showed that weight-normalized clearance was reduced in children with obesity, leading to higher anti-Xa concentrations under weight-based dosing. Fat-free mass weight-based dosing improved enoxaparin exposure across different age groups and obesity status.

Summary: Obesity is a growing concern in public health, especially among children. Due to the lack of pharmacokinetic studies, there is limited information to guide the dosing of opioids in obese children. In order to fill this knowledge gap, researchers developed physiologically-based pharmacokinetic models to explore the interaction between obesity, age, and pharmacogenomics in children. The models accurately predicted drug concentrations and dosing requirements in obese children, highlighting the importance of considering both age and obesity status when prescribing medications.

Summary: This retrospective observational study analyzed data from 12,891 COVID-19 patients and found that age, severe COVID-19, severe acute kidney injury (AKI), and ischemic heart disease were associated with worse mortality outcomes. The severity of AKI was associated with poorer kidney function recovery, while the use of remdesivir was associated with better recovery. In patients without chronic kidney disease, age, male sex, severe AKI, and hypertension were associated with post-AKI kidney function impairment. COVID-19-associated AKI was also linked to higher mortality and worse long-term kidney function recovery.
