OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the distribution and concentration of silver eluted from silver-coated polyurethane dressing (V.A.C. GranuFoam Silver Dressing; KCI, San Antonio, Texas) in vitro and in patients undergoing negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT). DESIGN: This was a descriptive study of the effect of silver-coated polyurethane dressing in patients undergoing NPWT. PARTICIPANTS: Six patients with infected wounds undergoing NPWT using silver-coated polyurethane dressing. INTERVENTIONS: To evaluate silver release in vitro, the authors soaked dressing fragments in water and human serum for different lengths of time and performed atomic absorption spectroscopy. For patient evaluation, the authors obtained exudate, serum, and wound tissue at different time points from 6 patients undergoing NPWT and measured silver levels by atomic absorption and dispersed x-ray spectroscopy. MAIN RESULTS: Silver from the dressing was immediately released in vitro at a rate 3 times greater in serum than in water. In vivo, silver was delivered to wound exudate at rates 102 to 104 times greater than in corresponding serum. Few surface silver deposits were detected in treated tissue. CONCLUSION: The high concentration of silver found in wound exudate reflects not only the affinity for silver in serum components and wound fluids, but also that most silver ions are not distributed systemically in the patient; instead, they are transported by the vacuum created by therapy.

The complexity of TGFβ/activin signaling in regeneration

Rene Fernando Abarca-Buis, Edna Ayerim Mandujano-Tinoco, Alejandro Cabrera-Wrooman, Edgar Krotzsch

Summary: The role of TGFβ/activin signaling in wound repair and regeneration is highly conserved in the animal kingdom. This signaling can either promote or inhibit different aspects of the regeneration process, with the cellular responses depending on the activation of specific signaling pathways.

Tailoring of the rheological properties of bioinks to improve bioprinting and bioassembly for tissue replacement

Mario Chopin-Doroteo, Edna Ayerim Mandujano-Tinoco, Edgar Krotzsch

Summary: The design of bioink must consider viscoelastic properties, rheological properties, injection speed, and printing nozzle diameter, as these are related to cell behavior and survival rate during and after printing. Mechanosensing plays a strong role in influencing epigenetics to modify final cell phenotype, which can impact replacement tissue. Biotechnologists in tissue engineering must take into account the biophysical properties and biological conditions of materials used, as well as material delivery and maturation modes, to ensure appropriate materials mimicking native tissue development.

Summary: Our study identified a unique gene expression profile in GGT/KRT19-positive HCC through a hepatocarcinogenesis model and RNA sequencing analysis, indicating dysregulation of genes involved in fatty acid metabolism, RXR function, and hepatic stellate cell activation. Downregulation of Slc27a5, Acsl1, Rxr alpha, and Cyp2e1 genes was found to be an early event in GGT/KRT19-positive HCC, compromising the function of Retinoid X Receptor alpha and leading to NRF2 pathway activation.

Summary: In this study, the expression of miR-31, miR-155, and miR-221 in a murine skin transplantation model was analyzed, and it was found that the overexpression of miR-31 and miR-221, both locally and systemically, is associated with graft tolerance.

Summary: Metal-based nanoparticles are widely utilized for delivering bioactive molecules and drugs to enhance cancer therapy. The application of green chemistry in synthesizing gold and silver nanoparticles helps in reducing solvent usage and controlling their properties. Evaluation of the anticancer effects of these nanoparticles mainly involves conventional 2D cell culture and in vivo murine models.

Antiseptic Effects and Biosafety of a Controlled-Flow Electrolyzed Acid Solution Involve Electrochemical Properties, Rather than Free Radical Presence

Alejandro Cabrera-Wrooman, Silvestre Ortega-Pena, Rosa M. Salgado, Belinda Sandoval-Cuevas, Edgar Krotzsch

Summary: A controlled-flow electrolyzed acid solution (CFEAS) was found to have excellent antiseptic and antibiofilm properties. In vitro experiments showed that CFEAS can kill both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and inhibit biofilm formation for 24 hours. Cytotoxicity tests demonstrated that CFEAS has minimal toxic effects on macrophages and good tolerance in fibroblasts. Clinical trials showed that a 24-hour CFEAS treatment significantly reduced bacterial colonization and removed biofilms from wounds.

Summary: The study showed that the hydroalcoholic extract of Amphipterygium adstringens and its metabolites, specifically 3 alpha-hydroxymasticadienoic acid and anacardic acids, have a positive effect on wound healing, tissue structure improvement, reduced closure time, proangiogenic effects, and modest antimicrobial effects.

Proximal ear hole injury heals by limited regeneration during the early postnatal phase in mice

Rene Fernando Abarca-Buis, Edgar Kroetzsch

Summary: Ear pinna in mammals shows different repair responses depending on age, with limited regeneration in middle-aged mice and scar tissue formation in young mice. This study examined the effect of ear topography, age, and sex on the repairing response of ear holes in mice. The results revealed that injuries closer to the base of the ear were repaired more efficiently through limited regeneration, and ear growth also accelerated hole closure, especially in male mice.

Summary: This study evaluated the direct and indirect effects of DACC-coated dressings on Staphylococcus aureus adhesion and growth, as well as on fibroblast and macrophage activity. Soap or alcohol-based products? The effect of hand hygiene on skin characteristics during the COVID-19 pandemic

Mario Chopin-Doroteo, Edgar Krotzsch

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate hand hygiene habits during the COVID-19 pandemic and the effect of repetitive use of soap or alcohol-based products on skin characteristics. The survey results showed that frequent hand cleansing led to skin damage. An experiment on skin moisture and elasticity among 19 healthcare workers and students supported this finding. Alcohol-based products did not significantly affect skin moisture or elasticity.
