Summary: This study aimed to simplify the conventional aflatoxin analysis method by utilizing the immunoaffinity column and normal-phase chromatography to detect aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, and G2. The optimized mobile phase enhanced fluorescence signal and improved sample cleanup method significantly increased recovery and repeatability. The proposed method outperformed the official method and met the US FDA's standards for examining human food, with a prolonged shelf-life of the mobile phase under room temperature.

Summary: This study evaluated different methods for the extraction and clean-up of aflatoxins from rice, and successfully applied the method to analyze rice samples from Spanish supermarkets. The results showed that the method of methanol-water extraction combined with immunoaffinity column clean-up had favorable performance, with high recoveries and low detection and quantification limits.

Summary: This study developed and validated clean-up methods for spices and infant cereals, enabling reliable quantification of citrinin. Some products such as nutmeg and infant multigrain porridge showed higher levels of citrinin contamination than expected, suggesting potential public health concerns.

Summary: The study found that HIV-1 VL testing laboratories in China generally performed well, with unsatisfactory scores mainly attributed to poor equipment conditions and laboratory management. Interestingly, HIV-1 VL testing laboratories had better performance in the CDC system than in hospitals.

Summary: The determination of carbohydrate composition is crucial in various fields, including food and beverages, material science, pharmaceutics, and cultural heritage. This study proposes methods to suppress the interference of inorganic ions in the quantification of sugars and uronic acids using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The optimized Solid-Phase Extraction (SPE) method showed the best purification conditions for accurate quantification in both standard solutions and a mural painting sample.

Summary: In this study, Bacillus pumilus E-1-1-1 isolated from feces of 38 kinds of animals was found to have the ability to degrade aflatoxin M1 (AFM1). By conducting whole genome sequencing and proteomics, it was confirmed that eight genes in Bacillus pumilus E-1-1-1 were capable of degrading AFM1, with the most degrading proteins being oxidoreductases.

Summary: This study reveals that the BDNF-TrkB signalling pathway is not only regulated by neurons, but also by astrocytic TrkB.T1. Defective signalling of TrkB.T1 in hypothalamic circuits leads to obesity.

Summary: This study identified non-polar compounds that coprecipitate with aflatoxins and developed an effective pretreatment method combining zirconia-coated silica gel and IAC. The method has been successfully applied for the quantification of aflatoxins in four types of samples and in real samples where mold growth was encouraged.

Summary: This study validated a next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based chimerism assay for monitoring engraftment in allo-HSCT patients. The inclusion of specific cell subsets (CD3 and CD66) significantly improved the sensitivity and accuracy of engraftment monitoring. The implementation of NGS-based chimerism testing has the potential to streamline high-volume transplant services and improve clinical outcomes through early relapse detection and timely interventions.

Summary: This study investigated the quality of next-generation sequencing platforms and cancer genome testing in Japanese laboratories through pilot proficiency testing using patient samples. The results showed that most laboratories were able to identify pathogenic variants, but there were still some issues that need improvement. This study is important for enhancing domestic cancer genome testing.

Summary: The desalination fuel cell (DFC) is a promising technology that can produce clean electricity and water from a single cell. This study proposes and demonstrates a scaling strategy for DFCs by adding additional alternating anion and cation exchange membrane pairs. The results show that adding membrane pairs maintains the desalination performance while moderately reducing cell power density, and also enables increased flexibility in the choice of anolyte and catholyte solutions.

Summary: This study presents the results of proficiency tests (PTs) on Trichinella conducted in laboratories in Poland from 2015 to 2019. The majority of samples examined by laboratories were considered correct in qualitative assessments, with over 95% accuracy. However, quantitative evaluations showed slightly lower accuracy, with 89% of samples considered correct. Laboratories made significant progress in detecting samples containing three larvae, but encountered difficulties in samples spiked with five larvae. For future tests, increasing the number of larvae in samples may improve evaluations.

Summary: The study optimized the conditions for the simultaneous extraction of chloramphenicol, florfenicol and thiamphenicol using immunoaffinity clean-up with two specific monoclonal antibodies. LC-MS/MS coupled with immunoaffinity clean-up showed higher extraction efficiency and sensitivity compared to solid phase extraction (SPE) for the detection of the three antibiotics.

Summary: The study evaluated the efficiency of different clean-up sorbents for analyzing dithiocarbamates in soybeans, finding that silica was an effective and inexpensive sorbent for removing matrix components without losing CS2. The method had a limit of quantification of 0.05 mg CS2 kg(-1) and both GC-ITD-MS and GC-PFPD systems were suitable for determining dithiocarbamate residues in soybean extracts.
