Summary: This paper presents a method that uses geotagged photos crowdsourced from social media platforms to collect data on visitor activities within national parks. By constructing individual space-time paths from photo geotags and timestamps, information such as activity types, total time, flow directions, and the centrality of points of interest can be derived. A case study of four highly visited U.S. national park units demonstrates the process and capabilities of the method, revealing a trend of increased walking time and decreased stationary time over the years. The method can be implemented with data derived from any social media platforms as long as geotags and timestamps are available, and can be used to monitor visitor activities in national parks and other outdoor recreation areas.
