Crohn's disease (CD) is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that can affect the whole gastrointestinal tract. The ileocolonic variant of CD, an inflammation of both the ileum and the large intestine, accounts for up to 50% of the cases with CD, whereas Crohn's ileitis affecting the ileum is diagnosed in about 30%. Crohn's colitis, which is confined to the large intestine and accounts for the remaining 20%, is difficult to distinguish from the large bowel inflammation seen in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). The pathogenesis of CD is not yet completely understood. Autoimmunity is one factor that can partake in the triggering or modulation of inflammatory processes in IBD. The major zymogen-granule membrane glycoprotein 2 (GP2) has been recently identified as a major autoantigenic target in CD. Interestingly, GP2 is mainly expressed in the pancreas and has also been demonstrated to be a membrane-anchored receptor of microfold cells in the follicle-associated epithelium. Remarkably, GP2 is overexpressed at the site of CD inflammation in contrast to the one in UC. By utilizing novel enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for the detection of GP2-specific IgA and IgG, the loss of tolerance to GP2 has been associated with a specific clinical phenotype in CD, in particular with the ileocolonic location of the disease.

Orthorexia nervosa: replication and validation of the ORTO questionnaires translated into Greek in a survey of 848 Greek individuals

Konstantinos Gkiouras, Maria G. Grammatikopoulou, Tsampika Tsaliki, Laurette Ntwali, Meletios P. Nigdelis, Alexandros Gerontidis, Eleftheria Taousani, Christos Tzimos, Radoslaw Rogoza, Dimitrios P. Bogdanos, Lorenzo M. Donini, Dimitrios G. Goulis

Summary: The present study aimed to validate the Greek translation of the ORTO-15 questionnaire for orthorexia nervosa (ON) and confirm the findings of the recently proposed ORTO-R. The results showed that ORTO-R is a reliable tool in the field of ON, suggesting that a 6-item questionnaire is promising for assessing orthorexia nervosa in research and clinical settings.

The study revealed that there is a great variability in diagnostic procedures and prescribed therapies, highlighting the need for standardization and sharing of treatment protocols. The results will help set specific national goals for PCD in Italy.

Orthorexia Nervosa Practices in Rheumatoid Arthritis: The DORA Study

Maria Sifakaki, Konstantinos Gkiouras, Helen M. M. Lindqvist, Georgios Marakis, Anastasia Petropoulou, Lorenzo M. M. Donini, Dimitrios P. P. Bogdanos, Maria G. G. Grammatikopoulou

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the tendencies of orthorexia nervosa (ON) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The results showed that most patients had ON tendencies, with a higher tendency in female patients and a lower tendency in older patients with higher body mass index. These findings highlight the importance of awareness and screening for ON in patients with RA.

Ceramides in Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases: Existing Evidence and Therapeutic Considerations for Diet as an Anticeramide Treatment

Ioanna Alexandropoulou, Maria G. Grammatikopoulou, Kalliopi K. Gkouskou, Agathi A. Pritsa, Tonia Vassilakou, Eirini Rigopoulou, Helen M. Lindqvist, Dimitrios P. Bogdanos

Summary: Autoimmune rheumatic diseases (AIRDs) are a group of connective tissue disorders and dysfunctions with similar clinical manifestations and autoimmune responses. AIRD treatment aims to achieve disease remission through inflammation control, but current therapies have low target specificity and may cause metabolic disturbances and increased cardiovascular risk. Studies have shown altered levels of ceramides in patients with rheumatic diseases compared to controls, suggesting their potential as therapeutic targets.

Summary: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a chronic autoimmune rheumatic musculoskeletal disease that is diagnosed before the age of 16. Chronic arthritis is a common symptom in all JIA subtypes. JIA and its treatment often lead to nutrition, gastrointestinal, and metabolic issues, particularly related to the use of methotrexate and glucocorticosteroids.

COVID-19 vaccine-associated myositis: a comprehensive review of the literature driven by a case report

Vasiliki Syrmou, Christos Liaskos, Niki Ntavari, Konstantinos Mitsimponas, Theodora Simopoulou, Ioannis Alexiou, Marianna Vlychou, Christina G. Katsiari, Dimitrios P. Bogdanos

Summary: This article comprehensively reviews a case of a woman who developed inflammatory myositis following COVID-19 vaccination. The incidence of inflammatory myositis after COVID-19 vaccination is not uncommon, but the role of vaccine-associated immune suppression in disease development remains unclear.

Summary: The FIGO nutrition checklist is a useful tool for healthcare professionals to discuss gestational weight gain and nutrition with pregnant women. This cross-sectional study applied the checklist to 200 pregnant women, revealing that 99% exhibited at least one nutritional risk factor. The results suggest a need for improving diet quality and emphasizing certain nutritional factors during prenatal care.

HPV-Based Self-Sampling in Cervical Cancer Screening: An Updated Review of the Current Evidence in the Literature

Nikoletta Daponte, George Valasoulis, Georgios Michail, Ioulia Magaliou, Athina-Ioanna Daponte, Antonios Garas, Ioanna Grivea, Dimitrios P. Bogdanos, Alexandros Daponte

Summary: Dynamic adaptations in global health during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic have led to the increased use of self-sampling for cervical screening, which plays a crucial role in improving screening uptake and coverage. Self-sampling is an important component of the WHO's global strategy to eliminate cervical cancer and has the potential to reduce health disparities. However, there is a need for effective strategies to ensure follow-up testing and management for individuals with positive self-sampling results.

Anorexia Nervosa in Juvenile Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): A Causality Dilemma

Maria G. Grammatikopoulou, Vasiliki Syrmou, Maria-Lydia Lioliopoulou, Konstantinos Gkiouras, Theodora Simopoulou, Christina G. Katsiari, Tonia Vassilakou, Dimitrios P. Bogdanos

Summary: This review examined the potential association between juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (jSLE) and anorexia nervosa (AN). The majority of reported cases showed that AN was diagnosed before jSLE, with a time span of no more than two years between the diagnoses. The stress of chronic disease diagnosis and chronic inflammation associated with AN are likely important factors in the relationship between these two conditions. Further research is needed to increase awareness among clinicians and explore this association.

Temporomandibular joint disorders in seronegative spondyloarthritis: what a rheumatologist needs to know?

Vasiliki Syrmou, Maria G. Grammatikopoulou, Dimitrios P. Bogdanos, Konstantinos T. Mitsimponas

Summary: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can be affected in the context of spondyloarthritis (SpA) and have a detrimental impact on quality of life. Intra-articular inflammation, synovitis, enthesitis, disc displacement, and cervical vertebrae malalignment are among the pathophysiological phenomena involved. Clinical evaluation, including imaging, relevant history, TMJ examination, and diagnostic criteria for TMJ disorders (TMD), can help identify TMD incidence, particularly in patients with ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis. The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) pain score and Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability Index (HAQ) quality of life score are useful tools for assessment.
