Summary: The recovery of wild tigers in India and Nepal is a significant achievement in conservation, but it also leads to potential human-wildlife conflict in areas with limited park size and tigers living outside reserves. By utilizing the TrailGuard AI camera-alert system, we were able to detect tigers and poachers using on-the-edge artificial intelligence algorithms and transmit real-time images to responsible authorities. The system proved effective in capturing tiger images and detecting poaching activities within seconds of triggering the camera, providing valuable early warnings for managing tiger landscapes.

Summary: The article discusses the controversial issue of predator protection, specifically focusing on the gray wolf population in Wisconsin after losing federal protection. The study evaluates the potential decline in the wolf population following federal delisting, highlighting the importance of rigorous regulatory mechanisms and independent scientific review in wolf management planning. Recommendations are made for clearer division of responsibilities between state agencies, legislatures, and courts, as well as urging federal governments to reconsider sudden deregulation of predator management.

Summary: The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) in the United States has led to significant expansion of cropland for biofuel feedstocks, resulting in negative environmental outcomes and potential harm to threatened and endangered species protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA). The lack of formal consultation between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and wildlife services hinders mitigation of impacts. Further research and consultation are needed to address these concerns.

Summary: The study shows that large carnivores are recolonizing Europe due to legal protection, but their population expansion may be limited by increased mortality in landscapes highly impacted by humans. In the Jutland peninsula, wolves are facing high mortality rates primarily driven by cryptic causes, likely illegal killing.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of using detection dogs as a non-invasive method to detect female estrus in a captive breeding program for the endangered Tasmanian devil. The results show that detection dogs can to some extent correctly distinguish between estrus and non-estrus devil fecal samples, providing a promising tool for monitoring reproductive status in wildlife.

Summary: Harvesting individuals for translocations can negatively affect source populations, especially for small populations. The study developed a novel metapopulation extension model to assess the feasibility of conservation translocations for a highly mobile species. They considered factors such as philopatry and metapopulation dynamics to project the impact on both source and destination populations under different scenarios. The study highlights the importance of transparent and quantitative evaluation of translocation feasibility.

Summary: The study used the SHELF protocol to assess extinction risk of subterranean aquatic species remotely, revealing key differences in risk between species and documenting dominant threats and their interactions through expert discussions. The flexibility of the SHELF approach for conservation applications operating on limited budgets and time lines was demonstrated through virtual implementation.

Summary: Many rare plant species lack up-to-date research on their reproductive ecology, which poses challenges for conservation efforts. In this study, we collected reproductive data for the federally threatened and state endangered Florida endemic mint, Macbridea alba. Our findings provide valuable information for reassessing the species' protected status and planning recovery efforts.

Summary: Integrating harvest records with citizen-science camera-trap data in species distribution models can provide more precise estimates of species-environment relationships and distribution patterns. However, inaccurate measurement of harvest effort may lead to imprecision in estimating abundance patterns using integrated models.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the factors influencing listing decisions under the ESA by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Data from 143 ESA listing decisions were collected, and factors such as taxonomic group, ownership of habitat, aquatic or terrestrial habitat, and number of listed threats were found to be significantly correlated with listing decisions. The study highlights the importance of comprehensive data for informed listing decisions to help conserve threatened species.

Summary: In 2018, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conducted a study to assess the potential habitat changes for five threatened, endangered, or special concern wildlife species based on the 10-year Stand Exam List. The study used modeling to simulate different scenarios of timber harvest and found that the most realistic scenario resulted in insignificant habitat changes, while extreme scenarios showed statistically significant changes for one species each. The study highlights the tradeoffs between wildlife habitat requirements and forest resource management objectives.

Summary: This study examines the conditions under which China complies with international norms banning the trade in endangered species, focusing on tiger bones and ivory cases. The authors trace key policies formulated by Chinese policymakers from 1981 to 2018 and find that domestic policy preferences play a crucial role in linking domestic and international norms. The localization process goes beyond a static fitting between domestic and international norms, with implications for wildlife policies in developing countries and China's wildlife policy development post-coronavirus outbreak.

Summary: Despite challenges in implementing the ESA, the need for efficient functioning of conservation laws like the ESA has grown as threats to species survival increase. Grouping imperiled species by shared habitats and threats in an ecosystem-based approach can enhance the efficiency of species status assessments.
