Summary: The study describes the variation in funding deficits across Brazilian federal PAs and proposes a model to explain this variation. It was found that there is a high proportion of funding deficits in Brazilian PAs, similar to those found in sub-Saharan Africa. New policies and innovative funding mechanisms are needed to bridge the large funding gap in the Brazilian federal PA system.

Summary: The consideration of local people's place meanings in nature conservation plans is becoming increasingly important. However, in Indigenous and ethnic minority contexts, these place meanings are often seen as static, limiting the inclusiveness and appropriateness of protected area governance. A case study of the Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area in China revealed that residents' sense of place and place meanings were diverse and influenced by changes brought about by tourism. This mismatch between traditional place meanings and current sense of place highlights the need for adaptive co-management planning to find a balance between economic development, nature conservation, and local community concerns.

Summary: In the northern part of Serbia, 27 important plant areas (IPAs) have been established in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. These IPAs contain diverse biocenoses with endemic species, forming unique ecosystems. They also include wetlands and areas crucial for geodiversity conservation. This study examined the level of sustainable tourism development and its impact on residents using a quantitative methodology and surveying 1134 respondents. The results suggest that the selected IPAs have the potential for sustainable tourism development, with ecological and sociocultural dimensions contributing the most to this type of tourism. The findings also emphasize the importance of involving residents in tourism planning and development and prioritizing nature conservation in these IPAs.

Summary: This article focuses on the activation of stakeholders' socio-cultural values through tourism co-design to promote sustainable tourism development in natural protected areas. Findings from 11 nature and national parks in Denmark illustrate how tourism co-design can change dialogue, negotiate differences, and identify opportunities for sustainable tourism development. This study advances sustainable development theory by demonstrating how stakeholders who identify with a protected area can leverage shared values for sustainable transformation, and proposes ways to imagine and relate to distant sustainable tourism futures with others.

Summary: Natural protected areas play a crucial role in environmental policy and can also serve as a significant added value resource for regions. Evaluating policies and planning economic development in these areas requires an integrated approach, with focus on factors such as transport, tourism, and economic development. This study specifically analyzes three protected areas in the Apulia Region of Italy and proposes policies that could be adopted by parks or reserves with similar characteristics.

Summary: This study proposes a method for projecting the impacts of ecotourism activities in protected areas in short-, mid-, and long-term scenarios. By utilizing input from expert panels and local communities to develop solutions for ecotourism, the aim is to maximize the efficacy of ecotourism activities and address challenges faced by local communities. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach in promoting sustainable ecotourism and biodiversity conservation.

Summary: This study examines the attitudes of stakeholders towards Tara National Park in Serbia and identifies the factors that shape these attitudes. The findings reveal conflicts between the park and the local population, with the community prioritizing tourism and the park leaders and visitors emphasizing protection and conservation. There is also divided opinion among the local population regarding the importance of the park as a national heritage. Visitors strongly support tourism development and activities following nature protection principles.

Summary: The study explored the therapeutic functions of a social rehabilitation service for survivors of Traumatic Brain Injury. Four main therapeutic functions were identified: providing a safe and predictable environment, facilitating the reconstruction of identity, promoting cognitive and social activity, and offering continuous support. A model of long-term social rehabilitation should consider both psychological and practical/functional ingredients to help informal rehabilitation services reflect upon their goals and activities.

Summary: The lives lost and economic costs of viral zoonotic pandemics have been increasing over the past century. Some policymakers argue that future pandemic catastrophes should be addressed through detecting and containing emerging zoonotic threats. However, this article suggests that proactive actions should be taken to minimize the impact of future pandemics and proposes three practical measures.

Summary: Evidence-based approaches are crucial for effective conservation practice, but the lack of evidence on the effectiveness of interventions limits their use. Conservation practitioners often lack the resources to fill these gaps, while funders tend to focus on delivering conservation rather than funding primary research. However, there is an overlap between the preferences of practitioners and funders regarding the allocation of funding for intervention testing. Funders can facilitate testing by welcoming applications, allocating funds, and providing training and support, while practitioners can contribute by committing to routine testing and establishing testing processes.

Summary: The distribution of fruit pigeons on the island of New Guinea is influenced by geographical accessibility. The coexistence of species in a particular year and location is a nonrandom selection process. The sizes of these species are more widely spread and evenly spaced compared to random sets of species. Additionally, the local status of a highly mobile species decreases as other resident species become more closely related.

Summary: Human actions are leading to plant extinctions at rates much faster than normal, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive taxonomic catalogue and greater knowledge of plant species distribution. Despite the importance of addressing these questions scientifically, current knowledge is sufficient to implement practical conservation actions, such as protecting biodiversity-rich areas and eliminating non-native species.
