Background: Invented more than three decades ago by Horning, GC-MS under atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (GC-APCI-MS) has only recently emerged from years of obscurity. However, the general acceptance of GC-APCI-MS is certainly constrained by the lack of spectral libraries, which make the traditional GC-MS approaches so powerful. Results: Here we present a concept of a GC-APCI-QqToF spectral library. The library is web-based, fully searchable and at moment includes spectra of 150 compounds from the most common chemical families. The fragmentation pattern of some chemical families is explained and a protocol for de novo identification has been provided in order to facilitate the identification of unknown compounds. Conclusion: A library for GC-APCI-QqToF is now publicly available online.

Macroalgae as biofactories of metal nanoparticles; biosynthesis and food applications

P. Barciela, M. Carpena, Ning-Yang Li, Chao Liu, S. M. Jafari, J. Simal-Gandara, M. A. Prieto

Summary: Nanotechnology has opened a new frontier in the food industry by providing new ways of controlling and structuring products with greater market value, especially in areas such as food processing, preservation, and packaging. Macroalgae have been recognized as a potential source of secondary metabolites, such as phenolic compounds, pigments, and polysaccharides, which can be used for biosynthesis of metal nanoparticles (NPs). These biosynthesized metal NPs derived from macroalgae show advantages in terms of cost, production time, and biocompatibility, making them suitable for various applications in the food industry, such as nanoencapsulation, nanocomposites, and biosensors. However, the potential toxicity of metal NPs should be considered, and applicable regulations need to ensure their safe use.

A review of recent innovative strategies for controlling mycotoxins in foods

Gamal M. Hamad, Taha Mehany, Jesus Simal-Gandara, Sarah Abou-Alella, Okon J. Esua, Mosaad A. Abdel-Wahhab, Elsayed E. Hafez

Summary: Mycotoxin contamination is a significant threat to food safety and quality, and conventional methods for detoxification face challenges. Innovative strategies such as cold atmospheric plasma, polyphenols and flavonoids, magnetic materials and nanoparticles, and natural essential oils show promising potential for mycotoxin control. However, complete decontamination has not been achieved, and integrated management systems combining multiple strategies may be explored for higher efficiency and adaptability.

A selective turn-on fluorescent chemosensor 1,1-diaminoazine for azinphos-methyl

Monika Bhattu, Aabid A. Wani, Meenakshi Verma, P. V. Bharatam, Deepika Kathuria, Jesus Simal-Gandara

Summary: In this study, eco-friendly organic nanoparticles were successfully synthesized with a size range of 15-20 nm. These nanoparticles demonstrated both U.V. visible and fluorescence responses for the selective detection of the hazardous pesticide azinphos-methyl in aqueous media. Additionally, these organic nanoparticles showed selective fluorescence responses in RO water, tap water, and orange juice. FT-IR and DFT studies helped identify the specific H-bonding interactions responsible for the selective detection of Azinphos-methyl.

Trace Element Imbalances in Acquired Hepatocerebral Degeneration and Changes after Liver Transplant

Henrique Nascimento, Maria Joao Malaquias, Catarina Mendes Pinto, Jose Sa Silva, Dina Rochate, Cristina Fraga, Jose Eduardo Alves, Cristina Ramos, Judit Gandara, Sofia Ferreira, Vitor Lopes, Sara Cavaco, Helena Pessegueiro Miranda, Agostinho Almeida, Marina Magalhaes

Summary: Liver disease patients, especially those with surgically or spontaneously induced portosystemic shunts, can accumulate toxic substances, including manganese, in the brain, leading to acquired hepatocerebral degeneration (AHD). This study examined the levels of trace elements in AHD patients before and after liver transplantation (LT), finding imbalances in several trace elements and an improvement in neurological symptoms and inflammation after LT. These changes in trace element levels may contribute to the pathophysiology and symptomatology of AHD.

Summary: The present study demonstrated the potential of Chamaerops humilis extracts as food preservatives based on their antifungal, antiaflatoxin, and antioxidant efficacy. Molds isolated from peanuts were identified as Aspergillus, Penicillium sp., Fusarium sp., and Alternaria sp. The extracts effectively inhibited the growth and aflatoxin production of A. flavus at lower concentrations. These findings suggest that C. humilis extracts can be utilized as plant-based preservative food additives.

Sustainable and Green Synthesis of Iron Nanoparticles Supported on Natural Clays via Palm Waste Extract for Catalytic Oxidation of Crocein Orange G Mono Azoic Dye

Dhiss Tesnim, Ben Amor Hedi, Jesus Simal-Gandara

Summary: In this study, an innovative green catalyst was used for the removal of Crocein Orange G dye from aqueous solution. The clay bentonite El Hamma-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron was employed as a heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst, and palm waste extract was used for the synthesis of the catalyst. The results showed that this catalyst achieved total degradation of the dye within 180 minutes, and the degradation efficiency remained high even after three successive runs. This study provides a sustainable and effective method for azoic dye removal from industrial wastewaters.

The stability and degradation products of polyhydroxy flavonols in boiling water

Shiye Lin, Jesus Simal-Gandara, Hui Cao, Jianbo Xiao

Summary: Polyhydroxy flavonols are easily degraded during thermal processing. This study used UPLC-Q-tof-MS/MS to investigate the stability of dietary polyhydroxy flavonols, including myricetin, kaempferol, galangin, fisetin, myricitrin, quercitrin, and rutin, in boiling water. The degradation of flavonols mainly resulted from the opening of the heterocyclic ring C to form simpler aromatic compounds. The degradation products included 1,3,5-benzenetriol, 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid, 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzoic acid, and 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzaldehyde, among others. The presence of glycosides in myricitrin slightly affected its stability, while the glycosides in rutin and quercitrin significantly improved their stability in water. During boiling, flavonols underwent various chemical reactions, such as hydroxylation, dehydroxylation, deglycosidation, deprotonation, and C-ring cleavage.
