The ELSA (Estudo Longitudinal de Sa de do Adulto - Brazilian Longitudinal Study for Adult Health) is a multicenter cohort study which aims at the identification of risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases in the Brazilian population. The paper describes the strategies for the collection, processing, transportation, and quality control of blood and urine tests in the ELSA. The study decided to centralize the tests at one single laboratory. The processing of the samples was performed at the local laboratories, reducing the weight of the material to be transported, and diminishing the costs of transportation to the central laboratory at the Universidade de Sao Paulo Hospital. The study included tests for the evaluation of diabetes, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, electrolyte abnormalities, thyroid hormones, uric acid, hepatic enzyme abnormalities, inflammation, and total blood cell count. In addition, leukocyte DNA, urine, plasma and serum samples were stored. The central laboratory performed approximately 375,000 tests.

Mariane de Almeida Alves, Maria Del Carmen Bisi Molina, Maria de Jesus Mendes da Fonseca, Paulo Andrade Lotufo, Isabela Martins Bensenor, Dirce Maria Lobo Marchioni

Summary: This study applied three statistical methods to identify dietary patterns in the ELSA-Brasil population and compared their similarities and differences. The results showed that these methods were able to capture the dietary patterns in a similar way while highlighting the particularities of each method.

Consumption of ultra-processed foods and incidence of dyslipidaemias: the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil)

Patricia de Oliveira da Silva Scaranni, Leticia de Oliveira Cardoso, Rosane Harter Griep, Paulo Andrade Lotufo, Sandhi Maria Barreto, Maria de Jesus Mendes da Fonseca

Summary: This study aimed to examine the association between consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) and the incidence of dyslipidaemia in Brazilian civil servants. The results showed that individuals with higher consumption of UPF had an increased risk of developing hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, mixed hyperlipidemia, and low HDL.

Association Between Triglycerides, High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, and Their Ratio With the Pulse Wave Velocity in Adults From the ELSA-Brasil Study

Summary: Atherogenic dyslipidemia is associated with carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV), and there is a linear association between triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and the triglycerides to high-density lipoprotein (TG/HDL-C) ratio with arterial stiffness. HDL-C has a stronger association with arterial stiffness, while the association of TG/HDL-C with arterial stiffness is dependent on HDL-C levels.

The association of diabetes, subclinical hypothyroidism and carotid intima-media thickness: results from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brazil)

Aida de Melo Spilack, Alessandra C. Goulart, Bianca de Almeida-Pititto, Carolina Castro Porto Silva Janovsky, Paulo A. Lotufo, Itamar de Souza Santos, Isabela M. Bensenor

Summary: The association of subclinical hypothyroidism and diabetes with carotid Intima-Media Thickness (cIMT) as a surrogate marker for early cardiovascular disease was analyzed. Diabetes was found to be associated with higher cIMT values. However, no additive effect of subclinical hypothyroidism associated with diabetes over cIMT was detected.

Summary: This study investigated the association between the use of potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) and medications that may impair cognition (PIM-Cog) with cognitive performance among older adults. The study found that the use of PIM and PIM-Cog was associated with poor cognitive function. Therefore, reviewing the use of PIM and deprescribing these drugs may be an effective way to improve cognitive function.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between psoriasis, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4), free triodothyronine (FT3), thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb), and subclinical thyroid dysfunctions. The results showed a positive association between FT4 levels and psoriasis in women, and a significant association between FT3 levels and psoriasis in the overall sample and men. However, further prospective data are needed to clarify the association between thyroid function and psoriasis.

Association of coronary artery calcium with heart rate variability in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health- ELSA-Brasil

R. A. Hoshi, I. S. Santos, M. S. Bittencourt, E. M. Dantas, R. V. Andreao, J. G. Mill, P. A. Lotufo, I. M. Bensenor

Summary: Current data suggests that there is a relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) and coronary artery calcium (CAC) in the general population. This study aimed to further investigate this association using baseline data from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil). The results showed that participants aged 35 to 74 years with lower HRV values were more likely to have prevalent CAC, and this relationship may be influenced by sex and age factors.
