Summary: This study found that the incidence of ankylosing spondylitis decreased between 1998 and 2007, then increased from 2007 to 2017. The rising prevalence may indicate improved patient survival. However, there is a persisting delay in rheumatology referral and diagnosis, particularly in women.

Summary: AS patients with vertebral fractures tend to be older and have lower values in FN BMD and TBS compared to those without vertebral fractures. TBS was able to detect 20% more vertebral fractures than BMD, indicating its promising potential in vertebral fracture discrimination among AS patients.

Summary: Endophthalmitis was found to be an independent risk factor for ACS in patients with AS, especially in AS patients with comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and in those aged 60 years or older.

Summary: This study reported 5 cases of AS patients surgically treated for thoracolumbar fractures using posterior stabilization surgery. It was found that neurologic deficits could be prevented by using a combination of unilateral short-level stabilization and bilateral long-level stabilization under different anesthesia methods.

Summary: This study investigated patient characteristics predictive of response to secukinumab in patients with psoriatic arthritis with axial manifestations. Nail dystrophy was identified as a predictor of response to secukinumab in these patients.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the frequency and factors associated with acute anterior uveitis (AAU) in different forms of Spondyloarthritis (SpA) in a large Turkish cohort. It was found that older age, smoking history, delayed diagnosis, longer disease duration, arthritis, positive HLA-B27, family history of SpA, and radiographic damage were associated with a higher prevalence of uveitis in SpA patients. Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis patients had a lower prevalence of uveitis. Early detection of uveitis can aid in the diagnosis of SpA.

Summary: Imaging plays a central role in the diagnosis of axial spondylarthritis (axSpA), with MRI considered the reference standard for early detection of inflammatory changes. Recognizing vertebral involvement patterns can help establish a diagnosis early and initiate therapy before irreversible changes occur. This review aims to present an overview of imaging findings in axSpA with vertebral involvement and detail the current recommendations for diagnosis in patients with isolated vertebral involvement.

Summary: This study investigated the choice of surgical approach and prognostic factors in AS patients with cervical spine fractures. The results showed that all approaches can provide good clinical results, and thus, the surgical approach should be individualized. The operative time and intraoperative blood loss were significantly less in the anterior approach group compared to the posterior approach group and combined approach group. Patients who underwent surgery within 48 hours of injury had a lower JOA score than patients who underwent surgery later. Basic AS treatment before injury significantly improved JOA scores after surgery.

Summary: The study found that the gut microbiome was significantly restored in AS patients after adalimumab therapy, with a higher abundance of Comamonas in non-responders compared to responders, although no statistical difference was observed. These results suggest the potential of gut microbiome as biomarkers for therapeutic evaluation.

Summary: AS patients in Israel have a higher overall risk of cancer compared to controls, especially for solid malignancies, CNS, kidney, and malignancy of unknown primary. Older age, comorbidity of diabetes and IBD, and treatment with DMARDs were associated with a higher risk of solid malignancies within AS patients, while NSAIDs treatment alone had a protective effect.

It suggests that these patients might benefit from more proactive screening, mitigation, and prevention of risk factors for hip fractures.

Summary: This study aimed to identify differential expression of peptides associated with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients using LC-MS/MS analysis. Bioinformatics analysis indicated that these differentially expressed peptides might be associated with MHC class I protein binding and pathogenic Escherichia coli infection pathways, which might further affect the progression of AS. Three differentially expressed peptides were identified that could significantly promote the proliferation of fibroblasts in AS patients.
