For many decades only two species of seahorses were recognized from Brazil: Hippocampus reidi Ginsburg, 1933, the long snout seahorse, and H. erectus Perry, 1810, the lined seahorse. The presence of a possible third species, recognized in 2002, brought about the need for a broad revision of the genus in Brazilian waters. A total of 335 specimens of seahorses, obtained from Brazilian and other collections, representing the three putative species from Brazil were analyzed: H. reidi, the species of greatest abundance and occurs in estuaries and the sea; H. erectus, which occurs only in the sea, and Hippocampus patagonicus was also determined to be present based on multiple specimens. Our morphometric / numerical and molecular analysis showed that the species currently identified as H. erectus in Brazil is actually H. patagonicus Piacentino & Luzatto, 2004. The existence of a possible third species, was instead based on the true H. erectus, as confirmed in the present study by the study of classical systematic and mitochondrial analysis. Thus, we recognize three species of seahorses in Brazil: H. erectus, H. reidi and H. patagonicus.

Summary: The bond between dogs and humans is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon that poses a public health problem. A study conducted in Apizaco, Tlaxcala, Mexico found that there is a problem with handling dog excreta, which can lead to zoonosis. Dogs without guardians were more likely to be parasitized by Toxocara canis and Ancylostoma caninum, while dogs with guardians and access to public roads were more likely to be infected with T. canis and A. caninum. It highlights the need for a comprehensive public health program promoting responsible dog ownership.

Summary: Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease mainly found in Brazil, where Kato-Katz (KK) thick smear is the recommended screening test. However, KK has limitations in sensitivity. Helmintex (HTX), a magnetic-based method, showed superior performance compared to KK in a moderate endemic area in northeastern Brazil. This study confirms the potential role of HTX in defining true-positive samples and certifying transmission interruption of schistosomiasis.

Revision of the generic classification of pike cichlids using an integrative phylogenetic approach (Cichlidae: tribe Geophagini: subtribe Crenicichlina)

Henrique R. Varella, Sven O. Kullander, Naercio A. Menezes, Claudio Oliveira, Hernan Lopez-Fernandez

Summary: This study proposes a new classification for pike cichlids, elevating the clade to the rank of subtribe (Crenicichlina) and redefining the genus Crenicichla. Teleocichla is maintained as a valid genus, while four new genera are proposed. The results also suggest that resource partitioning in environments with fast-flowing water and rocky beds may have played a role in the evolution of pike cichlids.

Vanessa P. P. Cruz, Matheus M. M. Rotundo, Patricia Charvet, Beatriz R. R. Boza, Bruno C. C. Souza, Najila N. C. D. Cerqueira, Claudio Oliveira, Rosangela Lessa, Fausto Foresti

Summary: Anthropogenic activities, such as overexploitation and habitat degradation, have caused significant population declines in marine species, particularly rays and sharks. This study focused on the genetic diversity of chola guitarfish (Pseudobatos percellens) along the Brazilian coast using single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Genetic analyses revealed hidden biodiversity within P. percellens, with distinct lineages occurring in different regions of Brazil. Management efforts should be tailored to these separate populations to ensure the conservation of chola guitarfish biodiversity. Additionally, further taxonomic research is needed for this group.
