The reproductive system of the important basal gastrotrich Neodasys chaetonotoideus is described and reconstructed on the basis of light microscopy, serial ultrathin sections (ultrastructure) and scanning electron microscopy. Starting frontally, the hermaphroditic reproductive system consists of paired and tube shaped lateral testes that do not possess elongated seminal ducts but most likely open directly via paired ventral pores. The unpaired, medio-dorsal ovary region contains early oogenic stages that mature caudally towards the uterus region, where the most mature egg is positioned laterally to the midgut. The ovary region is not covered with an epithelial lining whereas the uterus region possesses a distinct epithelial wall. Between ovary and uterus region, we have detected a conspicuous section of the female gonad, the vitellogenic oviduct that consists of a thick epithelial wall which forms cellular protuberances into the developing oocytes passing the oviduct. We interpret this as a special, hitherto undescribed mode of vitellogenesis in Gastrotricha. Further caudally, the uterus continues with the fronto-caudal organ, a complex of two substructures that are apparently homologous to the frontal organ and the caudal organ of many species of the Gastrotricha Macrodasyida. Neodasys chaetonotoideus obviously engages in spermatophore formation and transfer. In this study we develop a morpho-functional scenario for the gonads and accessory organs in terms of spermatophore production, exchange and oviposition. We compare our newly obtained data with already published results on the reproductive organs of several species of Gastrotricha by means of a species-character matrix and provide a computer aided evaluation by a parsimonious character optimization. A reconstruction of the reproductive system of the stem species of Gastrotricha on the basis of three recent phylogenetic analyses is presented. These reconstructions give support for a Neodasys-like reproductive system in the ground pattern of Gastrotricha with slight morphological differences and direct transfer of spermatozoa rather than spermatophore transfer. The evolution of selected characters is traced thus revealing some incidents of convergent evolution as well as the evolutionary replacement of the ancestral frontal organ by the derived frontal sac in at least two separated lineages.

Summary: Collections of the amphipod genus Oedicerina from the Pacific Ocean revealed four new species, each found in different deep-sea environments and showing genetic and morphological distinctions. The study also showed evidence of population connectivity across the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench for the new species. No species have been found on both sides of the Pacific so far.

Summary: The Bythograeidae family of brachyuran crabs is unique in that all genera and species are endemic to hydrothermal vents. German researchers collected 6 Bythograeidae megalopae from hydrothermal vent fields during an expedition, identifying them as Austinograea rodriguezensis through molecular analysis. The megalopal stage of A. rodriguezensis shows similarities and differences with other bythograeid megalopae.

Recent speciation and hybridization in Icelandic deep-sea isopods: An integrative approach using genomics and proteomics

Summary: The study revealed genetic diversity in the marine isopod species Haploniscus bicuspis, with multiple lineages identified in the circum-Icelandic region. The northern lineages display a complex phylogeographic history, while the southern populations may represent two distinct species. Minimal differences in proteomic profiles suggest ongoing or recent speciation processes.

Investigating the benthic megafauna in the eastern Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone (north-east Pacific) based on distribution models predicted with random forest

Katja Uhlenkott, Erik Simon-Lledo, Annemiek Vink, Pedro Martinez Arbizu

Summary: The eastern Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCZ) is a heterogeneous abyssal environment with low abundances of diverse megafauna communities. Potential mining of polymetallic nodules threatens these communities, calling for detailed spatial investigation. Based on the predicted probability of occurrence of different morphotypes, the study area was divided into three assemblages, with highest richness predicted at seamount sites and lowest richness in the western part of the study area. The presence of differentiated megafauna assemblages in prospective nodule fields highlights the importance of considering the geological and biological heterogeneity in monitoring and management schemes.

Abyssal vent field habitats along plate margins in the Central Indian Ocean yield new species in the genus Anatoma (Vetigastropoda: Anatomidae)

Leon Hoffman, Katharina Kniesz, Pedro Martinez Arbizu, Terue C. Kihara

Summary: New species of Anatoma Woodward, 1859 have been discovered in the abyssal hydrothermal vent field habitats on the Indian Ocean's oceanic plate margins. Molecular sequence analyses have identified six species, four of which have been described as new based on their morphological characteristics. The study suggests that all six species are likely new to science and are specific to the Indian Ocean. The Central Indian Ridge is dominated by Anatoma declivis sp. nov., while Anatoma discapex sp. nov. is found near the Rodriguez Triple Junction. Anatoma laevapex sp. nov., Anatoma paucisculpta sp. nov., and an undescribed species are mainly found on the Southeast Indian Ridge.

Proteomic fingerprinting enables quantitative biodiversity assessments of species and ontogenetic stages in Calanus congeners (Copepoda, Crustacea) from the Arctic Ocean

Sven Rossel, Patricia Kaiser, Maya Bode-Dalby, Jasmin Renz, Silke Laakmann, Holger Auel, Wilhelm Hagen, Pedro Martinez Arbizu, Janna Peters

Summary: This study used proteomic fingerprinting by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry to identify and differentiate different ontogenetic stages of Calanus species from the Arctic Fram Strait. The results showed that mass spectrometry data can be used for species identification and stage distinction. The complexity of mass spectra in later ontogenetic stages and the relative intensities of certain mass peaks were found to be the main drivers of stage distinction in these species.

Evaluating species richness using proteomic fingerprinting and DNA barcoding-a case study on meiobenthic copepods from the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone

Summary: This study successfully applied DNA barcoding and MALDI-TOF MS methods to investigate the diversity of meiobenthic copepods in the eastern CCZ. Comparisons of different species delimitation tools showed similar biodiversity values, but differences in species clusters were found, likely due to the high number of rare species represented by only one specimen.

An application of morphological analysis and DNA barcoding to identify Ipnops from the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) as I. meadi Nielsen, 1966 with notes on other species of the genus (Aulopiformes: Ipnopidae)

Summary: Although Ipnops specimens are common in the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCZ), a reliable species identification has not been possible due to the lack of captured specimens. However, a recent study utilizing morphological analysis and DNA barcoding successfully identified a specimen as Ipnops meadi and provided a better understanding of its morphological characteristics. Furthermore, the study suggests the presence of a previously undescribed Ipnops species in Australian waters.

Summary: A new species of the Acanthocyclops genus is described from freshwater bodies in Southeast Mexico. This species, Acanthocyclops fiersi n. sp., is the third one described from the Neotropics. Comparative morphology and molecular methods supported its distinction from other species in the A. vernalis-robustus species-complex. The study also highlights the regional diversity of Acanthocyclops and the need for further research in the Neotropics, and includes an identification key for Acanthocyclops species in Mexico.
