Summary: The number and popularity of backyard poultry and livestock farming have increased in California and other states in the United States due to consumers' preference for local and organic products. This study examined on-farm management and farmers' understanding of Veterinary Feed Directive and California Senate Bill implications for disease prevention, biosecurity procedures, and antimicrobial use in small-scale and backyard farms in California. The results showed that backyard and small-scale farmers primarily raised chickens or small ruminants for personal use, and antibiotics were generally used under veterinary guidance for individual treatment of sick animals. The implementation of Veterinary Feed Directive and California Senate Bill encouraged the judicious use of antibiotics and strengthened the relationship between farmers and veterinarians, leading to the reduction of antibiotic use under veterinary oversight.

Summary: The study in small-scale chicken farms in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam showed that providing veterinary advice can significantly reduce antimicrobial use, decrease mortality rates, and increase chicken bodyweight without compromising flock health and productivity.

Summary: Disease outbreaks in aquaculture have significant economic impacts, but small-scale catfish farms have been neglected in research. This study quantifies the economic value of disease outbreaks, assesses the profitability of fish farms at different mortality rates, and identifies the challenges faced by farmers in preventing and controlling aquaculture diseases in Nigeria.

Summary: The study aimed to characterize the traditional systems of small pig producers in the Jipijapa region of Manabi, Ecuador, and classify farms into representative categories for aid policy implementation. Differences in social, productive, and local resource variables were identified between seven communities, leading to the identification of five clusters with common characteristics. The analysis highlighted the importance of factors such as location, agricultural activities, and the use of indigenous resources in construction.

Summary: This study explored the risk factors associated with avian influenza H5 and H9 seropositivity in backyard chicken farms in Bangladesh. It found that crow abundance in garbage dumping places, presence of migratory wild birds within villages, garbage around poultry houses, specific trading practices, and contact of backyard chickens with other animals were all associated with higher odds of H5 or H9 seropositivity. The findings suggest that small-scale poultry farmers can address these risk factors without requiring large investments, thereby reducing the likelihood of avian influenza outbreaks.

Summary: The genetic nature of currently circulating Newcastle disease virus (NDV) genotypes in backyard poultry flocks in East Africa is poorly understood. This study characterized the NDV genotypes in Tanzania and found that subgenotype VII.2 is the predominant strain in the region. This information is important for the design of vaccines and disease control efforts.

Summary: The poultry sector plays a crucial role in Kenya's food and economic security, but antimicrobial resistance poses risks to production. Antibiotics are often used for prophylaxis, growth promotion, and egg production improvement, rather than disease treatment. Improving vaccination, biosecurity practices, and proper labeling of antimicrobial drugs could be key opportunities for reducing disease burdens and promoting prudent antimicrobial use.

Summary: This study presents surveillance data of avian influenza viruses in poultry in Ghana from 2017 to 2019. The results show the ongoing spread of H9 avian influenza viruses among poultry in Ghana, with the possibility of importation from North Africa and Burkina Faso. Although these viruses possess some molecular markers of virulence and mammalian host adaptation, the low pathogenicity confirmed by the HA cleavage site analysis indicates a relatively low risk. Poultry farmers need to remain vigilant and take appropriate public health measures to prevent the spread of the viruses to other animals and humans.

Summary: This study investigated the fund security status of small-scale fish farms in Nigeria. The results showed that only 31.7% of the farms had fund security, while 68.33% had insufficient fund capacity. It is necessary for financial institutions to provide facilities for savings and offer adequate financial interventions at lower interest rates to boost fund security for small-scale fish farmers.

Summary: This study analyzes the structural characteristics of agriculture in the EU and Serbia, and identifies regional differences along north-south and west-east divisions. Serbian agriculture mainly consists of small farms, and policy changes should focus on regions with unfavorable structural characteristics, particularly small farms that have potential for improved competitiveness and social sustainability in rural areas.

Summary: Small-scale farms are important for food security, but they lack technological advancement, especially in the global south. This article proposes Model H as a new framework to facilitate technological transfer and appropriation for small producers. The model is validated through a pilot test using an intelligent irrigation technology called AgroRIEGO. The study identifies implementation obstacles and emphasizes the importance of knowledge management in the process of technology transfer and appropriation.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the within-farm and outside-farm drivers of colistin resistance in small-scale chicken farms in the Mekong delta of Vietnam. The results showed that colistin resistance in chickens was mostly affected by importations of resistance, and to a lesser extent, by recent antimicrobial use.
