Background: In this retrospective study, we evaluated the prognostic effect of positive lymph-node ratio (pLNR) on patients with stage III colorectal cancer (CRC). Our paper is the first analysis, to our knowledge, to deal with such data from the Middle East. Methods: We analyzed the clinicopathological data of 535 patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer at our institution between 1983 and 2003. The 164 patients diagnosed with stage III disease were divided into two categories based on lymph-node ratio (LNR) being the ratio of positive lymph nodes over total lymph nodes dissected: LNR <= 0.4 and LNR >0.4. We used Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazard models to evaluate the prognostic effect of pLNR. Results: The 10-year survival rate for the patients with stage IIIA, IIIB and IIIC cancers were 76%, 56% and 0% respectively (P = 0.014). Using pLNR of 0.4 as the cutoff point was found to yield clinically and significant results, with a significant difference in the outcomes of patients with pLNR <= 0.4 compared to those with pLNR >0.4 (hazard ratio = 5.25, 95% confidence interval = 1.2 to 22.1, P = 0.02). Conclusion: The ratio-based staging (pLNR) of CRC is a more accurate and clinically useful prognostic method than the number of positive LNs resected or the total number of LNs retrieved for predicting the course of patients with stage III CRC.

Factors Affecting Implant Stability Quotients at Immediately and Conventionally Loaded Implants in the Posterior Maxilla: A Split-Mouth Randomized Controlled Trial

Fadi I. Daher, Habib L. Abi-Aad, Hani I. Dimassi, Nadim Z. Baba, Zeina AK. Majzoub

Summary: The study aimed to assess the primary and secondary stability of variable-thread tapered implants in the posterior maxilla, and analyze the impact of various factors on implant stability quotients. The results showed that measurement direction and time are the most significant parameters affecting the stability quotients of these implants in the posterior maxilla.

Summary: The aim of this study was to develop nanoparticles that can release drugs directly on the epithelium of the intestinal mucosa. These nanoparticles were prepared by using ionic gelation between chitosan and polyphosphate. The characteristics of the nanoparticles were analyzed, and their drug release ability and cytotoxicity were evaluated. The results showed that these nanoparticles have the potential to deliver drugs on the absorption membrane without causing toxicity.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the treatment of COVID-19 inpatients and found that patients receiving high dose vitamin C intravenous injection often experienced dyspnea and desaturation, and were more likely to require oxygen therapy. In comparison, patients treated with remdesivir were more likely to be discharged after clinical improvement. The study concludes that further research is needed to establish local guidelines for the treatment of COVID-19.

Student nurses knowledge toward needle stick injuries in Jordan

Ahmad Mahmoud Saleh, Shamweel Ahmad, Hiba Shamweel, Mohammad H. Abuadas

Summary: This study aimed to assess the knowledge of Needle Stick Injury (NSI) among student nurses in Jordan and analyze its incidence and post-exposure management. A total of 130 student nurses from one hospital in Jordan participated in this descriptive cross-sectional study. Results showed that the participants had a good understanding of NSI, with an average knowledge score of 8 out of 10. Majority of the students (82%) reported experiencing at least one NSI exposure, but a significant number did not disclose it to their clinical professors or file incident reports. The study suggests the need for strengthening NSI education in nursing courses and improving student safety and post-exposure therapy during clinical practice.

Jordanian nurses' knowledge of Evidence-Based Practice

Ahmad Mahmoud Saleh

Summary: Objective of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of Jordanian nurses about evidenced based practice. The study included 120 Jordanian nurses from one private hospital in Amman, Jordan. Data was collected using an evidenced-based practice knowledge tool. Out of 120 nurses, 100 responded to the survey, resulting in a response rate of 83%. The results showed that knowledge regarding evidenced based practice was low, with an average score of 1.2 out of 10. Therefore, an evaluation is needed to improve the knowledge and skills of nurses.

OR and ICU teams 'running in parallel' at the end of cardiothoracic surgery improves perceptions of handoff safety

Safraz Hamid, Frederic Joyce, Aaliya Burza, Billy Yang, Alexander Le, Ahmad Saleh, Robert S. Poston

Summary: The transfer of a cardiac surgery patient from the OR to the ICU is a critical and challenging process, with the information exchange known as 'handoff' being a key focus for improving patient safety. A quality improvement project was conducted to develop a new handoff protocol involving the ICU team receiving face-to-face handoff, observing the final minutes of the case, and participating in debrief discussions, resulting in increased positive response rates for handoff safety questions. This initiative showed that having the ICU team run in parallel with the cardiac surgical team positively affects safety culture.
